Smile advice needed on possible move to vermont/new hampshire

Hi, I'm happy I found this. I currently live in Poughkeepsie New York. Went to visit friends this weekend near Brattleboro VT. The idea of moving got into my head. I've been looking at real estate and info. on different towns online. You can buy a very decent house for the price of a shack here ( not kidding), I'm single, have a 5 yr. old daughter, never lived in a big city, eat out very rarely. Just want access to good schools, library, stores, playgrounds, hiking trails, dance classes, a gym etc.. Can (i hope) afford a house for about 165,000. Been looking at Brattleboro, then some NH towns. Keene sounds like a pretty place with a lot going on. I don't care about nightlife, bars, that kind of thing. I wouldn't want to be too much further from Bratt. area. What about some of the smaller towns near Keene? House prices and taxes seem cheaper. Swanzey, Chesterfield, or Westmoreland, Hinsdale. I have not yet visited any of these towns. Or, any smaller towns in Vermont near Bratt? The idea really excites me. Lived in NY state my whole life. What are my chances of making a living in these areas. Right now I'm mainly doing housecleaning/childcare. Don't have interest in business, retail etc.. I receive survivor's benefits monthly so don't need a full time job, just enough extra to cover the bills. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Hi there, not familiar with the Keene area. A little more familiar with Brattleboro, but not much.
Check out the town of Rockingham (Bellows Falls). Bellows Falls is an up & coming town. Between Bratt & Bellows Falls are Putney, Dummerston, & Wethersfield. All nice, but very small, towns.
You may also want to check out Bennington, VT. I like Arlington a little to the north of Bennington. Not sure how far $165K would get you in that area though.
Good luck!

The prices have lowered in Southern Vermont... You can definately buy in Bellows Falls or Springfield Vermont for MUCH LESS than a year ago! Chester has some great deals on great houses, it is a quaint town... great for raising the kids... and they have a great school system too!
Happy Hunting!
