it's funny how different perspectives are of whether NH is better or worse - in the 50's a trip to Hampton Beach meant bringing out the trash with everything else when you left...taking shells and rocks was OK. drinking on the beach was not out of the question as long as public intoxication was not part of the scene. Dad could occasionally puff a cigarette and sip a beer.
in the 60's, trash cans were put on the beach to keep it cleaner because unfortunately, not everyone picked up their trash
then, it was realized that the trash cans needed to be emptied every day and more $$ needed to be raised to maintain the cleanliness of the beach - the tax payers couldn't afford the increased expenses and something had to give
so, generally over the 80's and 90's, the trash cans were removed and now we are back to taking out what we bring in
drinking is not allowed on the beach and smoking is questionable - pictures may be banned next - invasion of privacy, they say
it appears to be cleaner tho' - just not as much fun as it used to be

West Haven.... a town you do not wish to drive in at night...PERIOD!...My husband works there, and see's much, sure, drive to a more pricey area, you have the nice homes, but, for the most part it is a run down, trashy town...
as for economics, score upon score of housing projects is always being made, but, the truth is,West Haven has no money to support the endevors....and I know this because my husband is one of them doing the mega blue prints, and draftings for the city that has no money to build the proposed plans...troll upon the many streets,if you can skirt the drug activities upon numerous corners, you get great sections that boosts everything from soiled mattresses to toilets and trash everywhere....
It is not only because of big business....it is because people do not care...There is no excuse for how each person decides to live, but more the factor of personal ways......big business does not cause people to live like pigs, sure, you may not have the extra nice things as those that have $$,but it sure does not cause trash to pile up,lack of cleaning up your neighborhood, nor the fact, one must hang out in droves upon streets and corners.....loitering in front of business, and tagging everything up,that is just simply, the lack of giving a damn.

here is a good one for you, In a town called west haven in CT their is a town that was like many real nice towns in NH. Back in the late '70's they needed MONEY! and how where they to get it?? They got it by letting big business (Retailers) in to the town upping taxes and getting land owners to sell. In more then 20 years time the town is much richer and looks fantastic and has the biggest beach on the CT coast line that is close to three miles long. And is now one of the most richest towns in the New Haven CT area. The town even has great schools and alot of rich history behind it more so then any town I have read about in NH and some of the best eating places in new england 3 to 5 stars to boot. What helped this town was change and buses so people can get jobs and go to work inother towns.
Welcome to the 21st century bud things are changing and will change no matter what.
Also more students vote then you think they do.

"A lot of the towns mandate minimum sizes for their lots and even subdivisions routinely have at least 1/2 acre lots."
Derry used to have a minimum one acre lot size for building - they even had a moratorium against new building for three years at one point because they were growing so fast. However, there are ways around that. Instead of getting homes with minimum one acre lots built across the street from me where there used to be a 180 acre beef cattle farm, I got condos on community land. 45 houses on 10 acres, the rest of the land was swamp and not viable for building. There used to be one kid at the bus stop out front of my house, now there's 50. It's one of the reasons I moved.

Sure, but low paying jobs, no jobs, welfare, disability, etc do not promote the pride one has in home ownership and the neighborhood around them. Many neighborhoods that are slums are rentals or low income housing payed for by the state.
One thing I've noticed about renters is they don't fix or take care of anything no matter how bad it looks, or how broken it is. Most wont even call the landlord to fix it because they are afraid you will raise the rent.

Worst place to live in NH? I suggest at the northern end of High Range Road in Londonderry. When Manchester airport was a non event with mostly general aviation on an old air force base it wasn't bad. Now that the airport has become Boston/Manchester airport with lots and lots of domestic and freight traffic, you practically need earplugs to avoid hearing damage because the main north/south runway lines up with High Range Road. At the north end the airplanes are about 500 ft above the ground at full power. They are loud and frequent.
I live at the south end of HR across rt 102 and I find the planes annoying even though I like airplanes. The rest of Londonderry is a very nice suburban community with decent access to Boston (except in afternoon snowstorms).

We are thinking of moving to Pelham but my husband is worried about the commute to Lexington (just outside 128). We wish we could stay in Connecticut but we have no choice! Thanks for the help

NH worst places
Seacoast is cool ....Monadnock area is cool and North of Concord.
I also like Manchester NH...
I'd say the places I dont like are Dover, Rochester -Durham Corridor. that's about it. I didn't like Lebanon as much as some other parts of new hampshire either.
Some parts of NH i dont like close to the NH border but most of NH is cool
The mountains and Northern parts I like best
tho as cities go Manchester and Concord are my favorites
I like the North Conway area too.

Some towns are for the richer
In southern NH it's all about bang for the buck. Frankly, those people that brag about schools...just brag! If your child is bright why not let him or her be the star. I am a teacher and I always warn parents...if you have a super bright child do you want him or her in a school with all bright kids? Or do you want him or her to shine? Number one is better than number two...let us all face it!!! So move to some expensive town so your child can be number 25 or move to a less expensive town and be number 1. I'm on a college admissions board frankly no one knows some of these town names...they know first in the class. Also, move to a less expensive town and live in a beautfiul home. Look, I'm a straight shooter...if you want to know my opinion ask me directly.
