Sorry I just saw your question. I'd been leaning toward Bangor, or its low cost of living, arts offerings, and beauty, plus a hospital. But I'm thinking it may be too cold and I'm wondering about the dangers of spring flooding. It's right on a river. Portland sounds nice but very high property taxes, as does much of Maine. But not Bangor! Good luck.
Yes I guess that's true, that liberal states have higher taxes. I'm hoping for a happy middle-of-the-road place. And I'm looking for no tax on Social Security income. Thanks for your thoughts.
Quick question about property taxes which I know are high in NH. How often do you pay them just once a year or quarterly?
Say I buy a house for $500,000. Can I set it up that I make one payment which also includes the property tax?
Also do most houses in NH have basements? Is this included in the square footage of the house?

Thanks.
Taxes are due twice a year. I'm not sure I understand the next question, but yes, you can have the taxes added to your monthly mtg payment and your bank will remit the taxes to the town.
Yes, most have basements. No, living space that is below grade isn't usually included in square footage.
The OP hasn't been here since 2015, so I doubt s/he is going to see your question.
