A guy who works with my husband and has lived in Littleton for many years told him that about 15 or so years ago there was a major fire right on Main Street in the vicinity of the Village Book store, that wiped out a good chunk of the buildings there, but he couldn't remember all the particulars.
We also heard the building where the fire started was vacant, but still had electricity going to it, had a sprinkler system, but the system was not on. A lot of what we're hearing is, of course hearsay at this point. Once the fire marshall's report is in, then we'll know more.
I must say I was "impressed" by the resilience of one of those who lost their home. When interviewed, he stated that he was upset that he had lost family mementos, pictures, etc., but went on to say everything else could be replaced and he had been thinking of buying a house in the spring, but maybe he would do it a little earlier now.
I'm so impressed by all the companies who responded to the mutual aide request and the fact that they were able to keep the fire from spreading to other areas. Watching the reports on WMUR and WPTZ last night, it was very clear how much worse it *could* have been. I was also very proud of our fire chief when he commended not only Littleton firefighters but also those of surrounding communities who answered the mutual aide call.
As I mentioned in a post elsewhere, my husband was a volunteer firefighter for 25, well actually 26 years, and they all have my utmost respect and gratitude for what they do. Those who fought yesterday's fire are to be commended, although I suspect their answer would be, "It's what we do." <g>
Right now we have a mix of freezing rain/rain, so that should help with putting out any hot spots that remain.
If there are any firefighters who read this forum - Thank you for what you do!

Also, kudos to the Sugar Hill Inn who are putting up the folks who lost their homes for free, as long as they need it (according to the WCAX news last night).

Yes! I forgot to mention that!
That's one thing we would never have seen where we moved from - someone may have offered lodging for a night for free, after that, *maybe* a reduced price, but not what Sugar Hill Inn has done.
The people up here never fail to impress me with their caring, understanding and attitude.

Hey Dare to Dream we are fine also,we are not near the fire. Went to check it out in the morning. My son told me the house that burned down was a kid from the high school. We are over near Remich Park.

How is the family doing? I was in Porfido's this morning and contributed to the jar they had there for those who were displaced.
BTW - Were you able to see any of the flames that morning? I was really surprised that we couldn't see flames or smoke.

No we didn't see any flames but smelled the smoke. We weren't sure what it was until my husband went down to main street. We didn't loose our electric only our cable and dsl. I know that Laconia Bank had set up a fund for the family.
