Default Where can I go for...

Some good food that is not part of a chain restaurant in the South East NH area and up into Portland ME?

I am going to visit New England this summer and want to get a locals view point on some good places to eat, be it a diner, hole in the wall or restaurant. Heck, anything you can tell me regarding a visitor would be great. Best beach, photo opportunity, light houses, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Newicks Lobster House in Dover is fun. There is a park across the way with views of Great Bay. We'd go to Newicks and get lobster stew and fried clams take out and go to the park to watch the boats coming in.

In Portland, I suggest Dimillo's floating resturant(sp). It is a resturant on a large boat. Nice scenery. Good food perhaps a little pricey.

We took my dad there-he loves seafood. I do not eat seafood and there were still choices for me.

Also, if you are looking for a good hot dog or burger, I suggest Wild Willy's Burgers in York on Rt 1. There are also Wild Willy's in Rochester, NH and Portland but I have not been to those. Also, Flo's Hot Dogs is also on Rt 1 not sure if it is York or Kittery. If you go during peak time-be prepared to wait.

I highly reccomend both places. I like to eat

Nicole

Try Petey's Seafood in Rye and the Maine Diner in Wells, Maine. Many of the veggies used in the meals are grown in the garden behind the diner. Good, homestyle food. Be prepared to wait at both locations.

Thank you everyone, much appreciated. This makes it so much easier than trying to find a place on my own.

I know the New England coast can be rocky but are there good sandy beaches to stroll in either NH or ME?

the bottom picture of Maine is taken at high tide - the water goes down roughly 50 feet to leave more beach area

Default Sandy Beaches...

There are LOTS of sandy beaches in NH and ME. Seabrook Beach is sandy, and much quieter than Hampton, just to the north. Back when I had all the time in the world, I used to like parking at "the line" (of Seabrook NH/Salisbury MA) and walking either south to Salisbury (a long walk!) or north to the river, then following it to the Hampton Bridge, and back again.

In Hampton, you can park at the Hampton State Park (AKA The Reservation, has bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, etc. It's carry in/carry out-no trash cans.) and from there, you can walk up as far north Rocky Bend. After that, it's.. well, rocky :T

After that, there are a couple more sandy but smaller beaches, Wallis Sands and Jenness.

I find myself going to Maine's beaches more often these past several years. My favorite is Ogunquit, parking is very limited, and even on the nicest of days, it's never TOO crowded. Also, Long Beach (not sure if it's in York or Wells) is a sandy beach as well.

Have fun strolling
