Work in Coos county.
Hi everyone.
I'v got a camp on some land in Stratford & have been considering making a move for several years now. I work in construction, mostly sheetmetal for roofing but I'v done many things & was wondering if anyone had any input on my chances of finding work up there.

well COOS county is where i'm from and my family still is. The problem with up there (meaning north of Mt. Washington) is that there's no jobs for anyone to have the money to build. The last of the papermills closed down leaving another 400 people jobless. It think you may need to look further south of the state where develpers are building because it's not happening up in northern NH at all.

I am guessing that a sheet metal roof specialist may find something north of the notch. There are a lot of metal roofs in the area. Most of them seem to need repair or replacement.

True but the people up there probably are out of jobs now that the last papermill closed affecting 330 jobs and don't have the money to fix them. It's a tough job market in northern NH.

That in Groveton?
I know what you mean about the work, most of what I do they do themselves. I was thinking maybe near Berlin or Littleton or even buying a buisness up there & giveing it a go.
Thanks for the responses.

Well i'm from Berlin and i don't think there's a high demand for any kind of construction or repairs up there right now. The city is really trying to work on bringing in some kind of work to the area since all the mills closed down but then again, the state or federal prison (not sure which one is there already and which one they are now building) but they are just beginning construction on it due to be done in 2010 so maybe that will bring in some people with the jobs who will need a place to build or repair.

Lancaster seemed like a nicer town to me overall compared with most towns in Coos County.
Even YAHOO real estate has the median price of homes for sale in that town at around $229,000 which is spendy compared with most other towns in the region.
For Berlin they are looking at trying to bring in new employers, and I heard something about a new alternative energy type of plant as a possibility. Berlin could always use more jobs.

It seems like alot of sucessful people up there do several things. Maybe I can buy a store & run a small side buisness. My wife teaches computer stuff so might find work easier.
I wasn't aware Berlin shut down its mill too. Our camp is in Stratford & I spend alot of time in the Groveton area.
Lancasters another place I need to look into more. Seems a fairly busy place.

If you're young enough (younger than 40, maybe 37), you might want to consider a job at the new federal prison in the maintenance department. Great benefits and retirement plan.
