GOOD thing about these posts is to show people moving here the negatives about the state, it can't all be good and there is good that goes with the bad like you said.. It can't ALL be good, because then its just a lie and decieving to people. We can't make NH out to be the "grass is infact greener" for everyone who visits the boards.. It needs to be fair to all sides and if that means that there are negatives then I say let them out! NH can't sweep all its problems under the rug and pretend everyone is happy about where they live.

With all due respect- I do not believe that is what Bryfry meant. It is one thing to discuss pros and cons of a place. It is another to get argumentative and nasty about it- I believe that may be what Bryfry was referring to.

I know that you are miserable here and I am sorry. However-no one here is lying or being deceiving trying to make NH out to be all good. I certainly have never done that. People should never move here based on message boards-they need to educate themselves, visit here numerous times and do unbiased research. If someone moves here soley because of what was read on message boards-they have no one to blame but themselves

I have much respect for the people on this board-they do not try to sweep NH's problems under the rug. If you look back through all the pages-we debate many pros and cons of living here-taxes, politics, schools, oil and gas prices, electricity prices and many many more. If one wants to move here and they read all the posts they will get a fairly decent idea of what NH is like. It is up to them to visit many times and do much research before moving here.

I am sorry that you do not like it here-but on the brighter side you and your hubby will be home soon

Nicolem

Me not liking it here has nothing to do with me wanting to hear all negatives. I don't disagree that there have been debates about pros and cons, however it seems after there's been too many cons we have to hear about how someone is sick of all the cons or tired of hearing the negatives, however that is the point of the post.. Thats why its called 10 things I HATE about NH.. we're not suppose to be balancing out the positives with the negatives in this post , its all about what you don't like.. And it seems like you mention a negative thing and someone comes back with "yeah but we have so and so therefore its not so bad" or whatever it may be however perhaps that person doesn't like it because we don't have that specific thing.. Perhaps there is another person who wants that too and that might be a big deal if we don't (I'll use FREE garbage pick up because IMO its ludicris we dont' have it) and we can't come back with yeah but the dump is a great meeting place for locals , cause its not, sorry but who wants to stand at a dump and talk for 20 mins.. Cause what about the fact that I have to pay to bring my garbage to the dump.. so NH residents loose either way.

We have tons of positive posts on the main NH page and this is the only negative one and yet there is still grimicing about it... I think people just have to deal with the fact that NH isn't THAT wonderful of a state and we should list everything that is wrong so A) it can be corrected or B) people are fully aware of what is wrong and let it help with their decisions...

People should not make their decision soley based on this site, however when people come here asking about a place and all we list are the positives and they are desperate to get out of where they live they just might be decived and it puts stars in their eyes about a state that has probably just as many problems as the one they came from.

SkiChick has a spectacular aura aboutSkiChick has a spectacular aura aboutSkiChick has a spectacular aura aboutSkiChick has a spectacular aura about
I haven't stated my 10 dislikes about NH so here I go ... oh, I refrain from using such a poorly used word as hate, so I will gladly rephrase it as dislike:

1 - I dislike that I am 8 hours away.
2 - I dislike that NH doesn't have enough snow.
3 - I dislike the fact that horse farms are being overpowered by house development.
4 - I dislike the Wally-Worlds that are allowed -- support local!
5 - I dislike ...

It's all nothing more than opinion! It's a single person's perspective and how that single person views their surroundings. It's what we make of our situation and our location. If somebody wants specific info on a specific region or town, that's different and should be addressed that way. People wanting to move should educate themselves about what's reality to them and not fantasy of how much better it will be after moving. When people move from one place to another, their perspectives, problems, and view of life come along for the joyride. This thread didn't educate me one smidgen about moving to NH. Asking specific questions about what is important to me is what got me educated. Sorry your opinion on NH isn't the great state you though it was going to be (for you) but it is that great state for many others who call it home and am sure your statement will be greatly unappreciated to those who have found home to be NH. I agree with bryfry here and that this thread has gone far enough.

Crazy4NH is on a distinguished road
Seems that this was the first answer to this thread. You can feel the excitement in the first words "Oh boy, I'll go first"

Contrary to this post, NH does not have tax extra for sending your children to another district. You are welcome to use your district or go private. Also, New Hampshire DOES have cell coverage.

I thought by reading your other posts that you were renting, but I see here that you are talking about making $40,000 in upgrades to an old New Englander, paying taxes and the view taxes, etc. So I'm really not sure which it is.

How many trips did you take before you chose Keene? You seem indignant at the lack of shopping, malls, etc that can commonly be found in other areas of the state. One or two trips to the town should have shown you what it did and didn't have to offer.

1) SNOW! Liked it at first but now its old, its dirty, its slippery, you can't drive when it snows, you get wet and cold and its heavy to shovel!
2) Unless you like winter sports there is NOTHING to do at all in the winter its either too cold or snowing too hard to go anywhere .
3) Taxes per child for sending your kids to a school they're not districted for. Thats just ludicris and shameful
4) Cost of living is high! Gas is outragous!! Electric company charges a $50 fee for just using the electric on top of your bill
5) No cellphone coverage anywhere
6) No radio stations (in keene at least) we get 3 that actually come in, the rest go in and out as you drive around town
7)Finally found out why my road is never cleared its becasue roads are plowed in shifts instead of just constantly clearing them when needed eg 5am then again at 12 pm then again at 5 pm.. (Keene again) so roads can be dangerous to drive between shifts
8) NO lights on the highways, they're extreamly dangerous to drive with very sharp turns, drop offs, only one lane to go each way with no divider in the middle, no animal guards so moose and deer can fly out in front of you, not to mention the skunks and porcipines sp?(they also have this prob with the animals in the neighborhoods we just had a pack of cyotes in a western Keene neighborhood the other day that required it to be on lockdown and bring all pets and kids in)
9) very limited shopping we have NO mall and the nearest is an hour away along with no culture what so ever
10)Housing is cheap but old. Its charming to have an old new englander but not when you have pump $40,000 in upgrades into it. And the taxes on the house are outragous along with extra taxes like view taxes if you can see a mountain or lake or pond etc.

I have more but those are my main ones for the moment that I've really had time to discover the longer I've lived here.

I'll just say you can't compare one town or city to the entire state of NH. It's wrong to pursuade potential newcomers to the state that the entire state is like your city/town because it's not. Sure mention your dislikes but be sure to point our your talking about such and such town/city. For instance, Northern NH is very different than Southern NH.

You also stated we should list everything that is wrong so it can be corrected

Well that causes a problem too because people who live in NH already obviously like it just the way it is or they wouldn't be living there and who wants people moving in trying to change things.

I think the title of this thread should have been titled
"10 things i should have known about NH before i moved there" because obviously if the potential newcomer did their research, they never would have made the move knowing already at least 10 things they would not like when they got to NH.

1) SNOW! Liked it at first but now its old, its dirty, its slippery, you can't drive when it snows, you get wet and cold and its heavy to shovel!
That's winter. Yes it snows all winter long.

2) Unless you like winter sports there is NOTHING to do at all in the winter its either too cold or snowing too hard to go anywhere .
You could join a health club, use their pool for swimming or just meet people. I really think if you had friends and family there, you would find something to do together.

3) Taxes per child for sending your kids to a school they're not districted for. Thats just ludicris and shameful
I don't think that's correct.

4) Cost of living is high! Gas is outragous!! Electric company charges a $50 fee for just using the electric on top of your bill
Gas is outragous everywhere in the country. Not sure about the $50 charge for electric. Never heard of that before and my family is not charged that fee in northern NH.

5) No cellphone coverage anywhere
I have national coverage and my phones work just fine when i'm in NH of course a few blackout spots here and there when driving in the middle of nowhere.

6) No radio stations (in keene at least) we get 3 that actually come in, the rest go in and out as you drive around town
Well you got that right. One or two stations and that's about it in Northern NH too and lets not forget the canadian music stations too. ugh....

7)Finally found out why my road is never cleared its becasue roads are plowed in shifts instead of just constantly clearing them when needed eg 5am then again at 12 pm then again at 5 pm.. (Keene again) so roads can be dangerous to drive between shifts
yes side roads are usually last to get plowed. Not much can be done about that unless you get your own truck with a plow and do it yourself.

8) NO lights on the highways, they're extreamly dangerous to drive with very sharp turns, drop offs, only one lane to go each way with no divider in the middle, no animal guards so moose and deer can fly out in front of you, not to mention the skunks and porcipines sp?(they also have this prob with the animals in the neighborhoods we just had a pack of cyotes in a western Keene neighborhood the other day that required it to be on lockdown and bring all pets and kids in)
Well sharp turns and drop offs are common in northern NH because your actually driving up and over mountains to get anywhere and half of NH is state forest so yes, moose, bear, deer and all them other creatures will venture to your yard. Something you just have to learn to live with. Afterall, we're invading their land and homes.

9) very limited shopping we have NO mall and the nearest is an hour away along with no culture what so ever
Something that should have noticed had you been able to tour the location before you moved. People up north usually drive down to Portsmouth to do their shopping at the malls but we make it fun as a day trip with family and friends.

10)Housing is cheap but old. Its charming to have an old new englander but not when you have pump $40,000 in upgrades into it. And the taxes on the house are outragous along with extra taxes like view taxes if you can see a mountain or lake or pond etc. What do you want? cheap and old or new and expensive? NH has a lot of history. Yes lots of old homes but come on, you can get a fixer upper for pocket change and put $40,000 into it to spruce it up isn't that bad. I love the older homes with the modern look. No such thing as a view tax at least up north. My sister has beautiful views of Mt. Washington from her back yard and she doesn't have a tax for it.
