#11) No trash pick up.. you either have to pay for them to pick up your trash or take it to the dump, which is about 15 mins out of town one way yourself.. Never heard of that, not too fond of it. Also for a city so concerned about going green etc. No recycling.. Once again pay for it or take it to the dump.. Nothing like spending your friday night with a trashbag in the back of your car driving to the next town over to dump it.

Dude, that's the same where I just came from in LOS ANGELES! I think the only place you can get food after 11 in America is at a drive-thru (or any pizza place in Manhattan).

Ahhh...I see you haven't gotten into the culture of it yet. Meeting at the dump and exchanging the latest dirt (pun not intended ) with the natives is part of the fun of living in NH. It's about the most exciting thing that happens every week. DH used to love his trips to the dump. So did the dog. So did I, actually. You can find some lovely old things (as in actual antiques) that others discard.

Smile Hello Everyone!! Please Smile!!

WOW!! I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO SAY!

In the entire time that I have been reading the NH board, I have not seen so

much negativity as I have seen here now!

And "NICOLEM" is right, HATE is too strong of a word!

When I was in College, I remember asking this married couple that I knew,

they were VERY HAPPY, several children, etc. etc. What was their secret to

HAPPINESS & a successful marriage. And they said first of all, you

APPRECIATE the GOOD QUALITIES in your spouse and you do not take them

for granted.

You DOWNPLAY, overlook & or ignore the bad traits that you might not like.

So, in essence bad qualities that you can live with, because the GREAT

QUALITIES are SO AMAZING, that the bad ones do not even count!

And obviously, your ATTITUDE & OUTLOOK on LIFE is KEY, or else it does

not matter if you are married to MR or MRS PERFECT/RIGHT, You are always

going to find something wrong! As in, is the GLASS HALF FULL or HALF

EMPTY?? So, in essence I think that you could apply the same advice

to a place you are moving to or live in.

In reference to NH, I THANK those of you posting NEGATIVE comments,

because that means that maybe LESS people will move there!

And it will stay the way it is!

And like CARRIE mentioned, if you have not spent hours in traffic in L.A trying

to get to an appointment, or stuck in a cab in NYC, and nothing is moving

or try the Beltway in the DC area And I could go on & on, whatever

bad conditions you might experience in NH, its nothing compared to other

places around the country. Really, I mean that!

"DARE TO DREAM" has always mentioned, how its all what you are used to, if

you have ever lived in Hawaii or had to pay for an apt. in Manhattan, then

you will LOVE NH, on the other hand if you lived in Kansas, or West Virginia,

NH might be too pricey for you.

And again, I am glad that the entire country does not believe that NH is

heaven, because we could not fit everyone in the state. Its NOT for

everyone.

For those of you that have had a bad experience with the STATE of NH, I am

truly sorry, and I hope that you can find your slice of heaven somewhere else.

And I wish you luck!

One thing that has always gotten to me, about when someone marries a

ROCK STAR, and later complains why there are so many adoring fans around

their spouse?? Obviously, something most of us would have a problem with,

however, that is how things were when you met them, right??

(Unless they promised you they would stop singing & going on tour, once

married)

Its a bit like if I moved to the desert, and later complained about the dry air,

or the lack of natural vegetation, or whatever else I can find to complain

about, I am sure I knew about it before moving there..... Or if I moved to

Vegas, and complained about the Casinos & gambling....

So, PLEASE do your homework before you move to NH, and if you choose to

move there, then make the best of it, and appreciate it!

So, KEN E. you said something that made sense, unless you have been to

really bad places, you will not appreciate a place like NH

And NICOLEM, its nice that you have kept your nice manners, I am a firm

believer that even when you get the door thrown in your face, if you keep

being nice, something will rub off on people eventually. Please stay as nice as

you are!

I have always heard that New Yorkers are rude, this or that negative

comment about them, and I can honestly tell you that I have never had

someone in New York act rude towards me. I guess because I always had

good manners towards everyone, from the Cab Driver, to the trash collector,

it did not matter, I was nice & polite with them, and they have always been

nice & respectful towards me So, I have NO problems with New Yorkers

And by the way, on another note, I think there is either already, or its on its

way to NASHUA a "TRADER JOE'S" or "WHOLE FOODS", not sure....

And for those of you that like food delivered at all hours, if you are in

New York City you can get Chinese, Italian, Indian or just about any type of

food delivered, and good quality food as well, not just junk. But that is living

in NEW YORK, where you can get just about everything 24 hours a day, but

with that, you also get what comes with New York, the good & the bad.

So, maybe you cannot get home delivery of your favorite foods, but you do

have a better quality of life in NH, less stress, the natural beauty all around

you, etc. etc. etc.

THANK YOU to "BRYFRY" & "CASUALOBSERVER" and anyone else that has

posted something nice about NH ! Your OUTLOOK & ATTITUDE will make NH a

better place for all of us!

LETS MAKE THE BEST OF WHAT WE HAVE!

AND ENJOY NH! TO ME IT IS MY SLICE OF HEAVEN!!

LETS TRY TO BE POSITIVE!

Oh, I almost forgot, I remember reading some time ago, about people were so

amazed about how their NH neighbor cleaned up their driveway that was full

of snow, and they did it without wanting any credit for it, they kept quiet

about it. I can tell you that type of kindness towards your neighbor is hard to

find in most of the country! More than 1 person said the same thing

on this board. So, that to me outweighs whatever negatives NH might or

might not have.

Thank You all for your posts! I did not mean to offend or upset anyone on

this forum with what I posted.

SMILE & ENJOY NH!

Take care,

Countrylv22

P.S. Great Post "BRYFRY" !! LOL!

See I was afraid of posting negative because I feel like natives/long time livers get offended by anyone saying something bad about the place they live and then it makes me feel bad. Sometimes I wonder about natives (I'll apply that to anyone living someplace say 7-10 years also) and if they feel threatened by someone coming in from the outside and for all intenstive purposes airing their dirty laundry of a place and pointing out that perhaps its not as perfect as some make it out to be. I dont think it its about people on here being negative and that they didn't do their homework at all. We all know it snows in NH. Not all of us know if we like the snow or not (if you've never seen it) or perhaps your circumstances change, like you're getting older or you get an injury and snow just impeads everyday life...

People post positive stuff on here all day about NH, look at all the posts. There are wonderful things to be said about NH. There are also things about NH that are NOT wonderful. There are things in the state that people had in others that were not aware they did not offer here in NH. I for one did not know they plow Keene in shifts instead of "as needed" if I knew that I would have reconsidered moving here as to not have to worry about being able to drive around when it snows just a little. A state can't be totally perfect and nothing wrong, thats kinda like false advertising, for every good there is a bad. The bad things have to be out in the open also..

"Oh, I almost forgot, I remember reading some time ago, about people were so

I do believe I was the one who posted about that, and yes it was kind.. However kindness is everywhere. After hurricanes people would be out fullforce in neighborhoods with chainsaws, and bags helping everyone clean up. People would put out signs in their front yards saying free showers for people who didn't have electricity. We had free bingo nights at the clubhouse where we lived, and people would bbq down at the pools and just hand out food to whoever was there relaxing. Kindness alone does not make a state wonderful in all aspects. I have met some downright nasty people, and one thing about the smaller towns in NE is that EVERYBODY knows EVERYBODY or everybody is related to someone, so you can't say dilly jack about anyone or god forbid anything bad about anything cause it gets around.. My husbands own police officers warned him to keep his mouth shut and that people were weary of him being the outsider. My mother in law a born and bred New Englander asked another one time why they were weary of outsiders they told her because they always come and then move away, so we dont like to get to know them becasue they just leave. In a sense the reason people leave is because nobody is willing to give them a chance because of such paranoia about them coming in and changing things or doing things new ways .There are some dirty politics that go on in small towns, esp amongs hiring people and in gov't agencies. Honesly unlike anything I've yet to come across.

Despite all that was warned to us we still moved here, and don't regret it.. Yes mostly all the things I was warned about were true. But thats how the town runs. I can't change it, I can't fight it but I can certainly warn other outsiders who are not aware or who have never been exposed to this kind of stuff where they lived that yes it does infact happen and that you have to be aware that not everywhere is like where you come from.

I dont' think anyone is offended by what you said, you make valid points, however NH has bad aspects also, so we need to get them out in the open so people who are thinking of moving here are not convinced NH is the end all of all their problems and that living here will be like an episode of Leave it to Beaver. We shouldn't critize other people or make them feel bad (which you did not do, I know that was not your intention all) because they find that what is good for one is not the other and is kinda just clearing the air.. I'm sure a native NHrite could find 10 million things wrong with the city I lived in in Fla. and I'd be right there with ya giving you a negative for everyone you give....

Well, I have a different "take" on this topic....

I don't see this as a negative thread at all, rather a "realistic" thread from different "perspectives" and different personality types, and I see it as a good thing. For people considering moving to the state, it gives them food for thought - for people already living here, it lets people from other areas learn a little more about each area (what's available, what isn't, etc.)

Each state has its pluses and each has its minuses - it's kinda like beauty - it's in the eyes of the beholder Each area of each state is the same way, i.e. NYC vs upstate NY - two totally different areas, different types of people are attracted to different things - it would be a pretty boring world if everyone thought the same and wanted the same things

Default Is the grass greener?

I had to post because my husband and I have seriously been thinking about moving south. We have three small children and we are all getting cabin fever! My family moved to NH from CO when I was 9 and my husband has lived here all his life. NH is a beautiful state for sure. There are a lot of things I like about NH but since that is not the point of this thread, I will share the reasons that I want to move...

1) Winter here is way too long! The first snow is always exciting and I do love a good white Christmas, but after that it is just depressing.

2) Mud season

3) Bug season... just when you can finally get outside you will be eaten alive.

4) Cost of living is way too high

5) Too many trees. I know that sounds weird but I need some wide open spaces!

6) I feel the people here are not all that friendly. I've visited the south many a time and there is definitely a drastic difference between the southern hospitality and here. I think people need to know you before they will be nice here.

7) The lack of radio stations in Keene! What is with that?

8) Only really one beach and it is totally packed in the summer! Not relaxing or beautiful.

9) Pot holes & frost heaves

10) Not enough to do with the kiddos. You can only do the library and park (weather permitting) so many times. At least in Southern NH.

I'm grateful for this thread! That was therapeutic.. I cant believe it was kind of hard to come up with 10. Maybe the grass isn't greener... actually since all the grass is covered in snow right now.. I'm sure the grass is greener in the south.. but you know what I mean..

I agree. I posted my 10 "hates" rather tongue-in-cheek. They're hardly things to lose sleep about. I HATE nothing about New Hampshire. I [lowercase] hate the fact I took so long to find it.
