It's sad that what NH used to be (before the Old Man crumbled and disintegrated) is now only in my memories.
There was a sign at the base of the Old Man of the Mountain that talked about how tradesmen of old used to hang out signs with a picture or what they did, or the product they made, and that here God created the Old Man to show that in NH He made men.
I always thought interesting that as the state changed and became liberal and socialist, and started what I viewed as a downward spiral, God took down His sign. That's how the demise of the Old Man seemed to me. "An Act of God".
Now I don't hate that, but it does make me sad.

OOOOHHH you guys have no room to talk My husband is from Newcastle and I am always surprised how the British just seem to arbitrarily drop letters and entire syllables from names. Examples: Worcester = WOOS-TA(r), Liecester = LES-TA(r). I'm not complaining or hating though, I just think it's funny to say a word not like it's spelled... or not correct the spelling if noone pronounces it that way anymore... no matter what country you're in. Trust me, I'm sure you are better understood in New England than you would be here in Seattle... my hubby steadfastly refuses to order fast food from "the box" or call in for delivery. Half the time, if he asks a question at a store, the clerk just gives me a confused look and I have to translate. I know the Jordie accent is a bit thick and can sometimes sound like the secret language twins speak, but it's not that bad after being here 6 years.

I have always ben annoyed by the short sighted, skinflint Republicans and would be Libertarian anarchists that are more concerned with thier own unwillingness to pay any taxes than with the long term health of thier communities. I am pleased with the changes being made in the state's political makeup. IMHO it is more appropriate to be concerned with what your taxes are buying and how the burden is distributed than by how large they are.

Well said GregW1. So many people complain about things like lack of trash pickup, road conditions, lack of things to do, but many, not all, are so dead set against raising taxes to provide for these things.
Its funny because when people ask what which place have the best school systems, nicest communitites, most services, the response is usually the places with the highest taxes.

Not true. Try living in California. Better yet, try Maine. They have the highest state/local tax burden in the nation yet the schools are atrocious and the roads/services are not much better.

So God, clearly a republican, placed a bunch a rocks in a certain configuration and over the course of millions of years deliberately guided the erosion of those rocks into the rough silhouette of a man? (Native American?) However, after a couple of lefties got elected to state government he got annoyed with man and decided to knock it down like a child's building blocks?

Sparky - both California and Maine are controlled by big business on a State level and do not see any reson to waste tax money on "local" issues like schools and back roads.

A common anti-socialist statement that forgets that the government can and will take everything away from you even if it didn't give it to you in the first place. They can also take your children and send them to fight in foreign wars, they tax you after you are dead, and provide the best medical coverage for themselves with your money while telling you to go buy your own.
