Default Commuting over the Dover Bridge

My Husband and I are in the process of looking to buy a home somewhere between Portsmouth and Durham. I was looking into Dover and thougt this might be a great fit for us. We've been hearing the Dover Bridge gets really backed up and is a nightmare to travel across. I commute over it but in the reverse direction during rush hour and haven't noticed too much trafic. Would the commute from Dover to Portsmouth be awful? Any advice would be great!

I just went west-bound over it tonight at 6pm. It was slower than normal, but by no means awful (by which i mean I went over at 40 rather than 55). I think it only gets really really bad on a holiday weekend Friday with people coming off the 95 and heading up 16 for the lakes and mountains.

I can help on that score--I live in Rochester and work in Seabrook.

As a former CA resident, it depends on your definition of the word "bad". Bad by NH standards? Yes. Bad by CA standards? Not even close.

Worst case scenario I ever had was a day when it was snowing like crazy on a Friday afternoon last winter. It took 45 minutes to get from I-95 exit to the first toll plaza at the Durham exit (6 miles). 2 1/2 hours to get home that night.

rmcewan is right--usually it's not too bad. Even "with" traffic I still get home from Seabrook in well under an hour (a 40-mile trip).

I knew somone who lived in Concord NH and got a new job out at Liberty in Portsmouth area. After the 1st day commuting decided it was not for her! The traffic during rush hour and driving into the sun both ways. She was back here at Lincoln in about two weeks!

I can sympathize with the sun thing. Spent the last 13 years doing that in L.A. - and it's ALWAYS sunny. It was like they specifically aligned the 101 so that at 6pm the sun is burning a hole through the back of your retinas.
