Thank you! I guess I wasn't crazy with the Lisbon/Littleton connection I hadn't heard or read anything about Dalton being part of Littleton, although I guess it makes sense.
Now I have yet another question - I have no idea if our leg was being pulled or not. Someone told my husband that the original town of Littleton was where the Moore Dam reservoir now is and at some point it was decided the town (basically Main Street) should be relocated to its present location. The "old town" was then flooded and is now the reservoir......has anyone else heard that story????? I can't find any documentation on that....
I'm a little leery of some of what people tell us - one of my husband's coworkers had us convinced that bears hoot (like owls) and whistle to communicate with each other, until we did some research ...Hey what do we know, we're "flatlanders"!
Anyway - any truth to the "flooding" story?

I have never heard of this. It is common for people to make stories up about this kind of thing. I know several towns where this is said to be fact when it is not. Your best bet is the Littleton Area Historical Society. They are located at 120 Main st They are open Wednesday from 10:30 until 4 P.M. They have a Museum there as well I believe. Anyway the Phone # is (603) 444-5816 or (603) 444-6435 I hope this helps you.

Yes Dalton and Littleton and Lisbon where all 1 big town. Back in the day of horses. LOL Think they got you with the bears wait, it will get better. Saw a young Moose on Dalton Rd. Yesterday. Just laying in someones yard. That was . The longer you are here the more they will try to stump you. WELCOME TO NH. Just our way of saying Glad your our Neighbor per say. Probably the scariest animal up here is about 10 inches. it is called a screech owl. And if you have never heard one, It Is really a screech. Sounds like a Banshee on the movies. All other animals up here aside from the VERY, VERY RARE Timber Rattlesnake, will only go the other way when they see you. Unless you are between a mama bear and her cubs. And even the timber rattler will flee before strike. Clough state park has a few hog nose snake. They are cool but harmless. They flatten out their head like a cobra when nervous. But if you take another step toward them they faint. (For real.) But If you hike and you hear a screech owl it will scare you. Don't worry they are harmless aside from sounding like a monster 400 times there actual size, they can't hurt you.

Now that we're closer to town and my work schedule has changed, I plan on going to the Historical Society - I have a lot of questions about the town and especially the history of the house we house we had rented.
As for the animals, I haven't seen a moose yet, although we have seen moose tracks, both at the rental and here behind the house. Haven't heard the screech owls yet....well except on a nature show Uh....the snakes? If I see one of those I'd be outta there so fast it wouldn't be funny! I HATE snakes!

The closest I came to seeing a moose was a "moose tour bus" on 302, sitting alongside the road where the moose supposedly crossed the road......That was last fall about the time the "leaf peepers" were peeping <g>

To get back to the snake issue - In NYS we had copperheads, but would only see them if there were drought conditions and they came down looking for water. The hog nose snake literally faints? I can see I'll have to learn about the reptile population up here! We were told about the bears - as long as we leave them alone, they will leave us alone and to make sure we steer clear of a mother and her cubs. (even if they don't "hoot" at us ). We were also told not to put out bird feeders as that would attract them.

Back to the Moore Dam - You know how there is a Lower Waterford (VT)? There WAS an Upper Waterford. When the dam was built, Upper Waterford would be drowned. The Upper Waterford cemetery was moved so that it would not be flooded. So....maybe there was a village of Littleton in that area. Definately check the historical society.

AFAIK Littleton was never moved to make way for a lake.
I was buzzed by a screech owl one evening while walking on a local road. Never hear him (they fly very quietly) until he "screeched" right behind me. I nearly did a reflex tuck & roll into the ditch. They are really loud but completely harmless unless you are a small rodent.
A friend of mine looked out his window one morning and saw a momma black bear showing her cubs how to raid the bird feeder. Bears just love oily sunflower seeds (and planrts).
