I'm planning on moving either to New Hampshire or Portland, Maine next year. While I'd prefer New Hampshire, I don't want to move to the middle of nowhere, and while looking at apartments in Concord, Manchester, and Portsmouth (I love Portsmouth, but it's out of my reach financially) I've found zero in-city housing that would accept pitbull mixes, even more so than any state or city I've lived in. At least looking through CL, Zillow, RentJungle, different rental company sites for several months now to get an idea, it's been made very clear that unless you can afford to own, New Hampshire's not a very pit-friendly state for renters. Nevertheless, I don't want to give up on the idea yet.

What are some good cities or towns besides Portsmouth for young people (in their mid-twenties) to look into? It doesn't have to be a bustling Metropolis, but I'd also like to be around some kind of a main street with a few restaurants, bars, other people around my age, etc. I haven't spent much time in Manchester, and zero time in Concord.

What is it about NH that appeals to you? And what activities do you like to do as a young adult?

Even if you didn't have a pit-mix, it's difficult for renters to find dog-friendly rentals. And of the places that are dog-friendly, usually there is an added damage deposit to pay upfront. Otherwise, I doubt that NH will ever be pit bull friendly.

I grew up spending my summers in the Lakes Region, so I know that area quite well. I think it's beautiful, and I like the people.

I like that everywhere is within reasonable driving distance the mountains, lakes, rivers, and the coast. I like doing outdoors things, but also want to be able to go to a bar and have somewhat of a small-city atmosphere around, which is why I'm looking at cities and bigger towns.

Try Nashua. Plenty of apartment buildings there and lots of dining and shopping. good luck.

Thanks, Nashua never even crossed my mind! I've added it to my list of possibilities.

Have you considered Dover? There's a lot of young people due to the nearby university, and the cost of living is less than Portsmouth (but you're still close to Portsmouth if you want to go over there). It also has its own downtown area with some bars and restaurants. There's a lot of rental property, I'm not sure if any of it is pit-friendly, but I'm guessing it might be a more dog-friendly area than Manchester or Nashua.

That will be added to my list as well. While I think I'm a little past the whole college-nightlife scene, I'm sure there are a bunch of post-grad student aged folks still around. Thanks for the suggestion! I also like how close to Boston it is.

You could try Penacook, NH. Its a suburb of Concord (village technically) with lots of apartments, many of which are probably more affordable than the average Concord apartment. It is directly connected to Concord so its certainly not a far drive. Not that its a great town for young people particularly, but better than average (NH isn't known for being great for young people in general). I mention penacook because you mention being on a budget and it's pretty affordable. You could try Nashua like another poster mentioned but the downtown there isn't as nice as Concord's is. Don't know if that maters to you.

I second the Dover area recommendation. I lived there for several years, and it was great. Plenty to do, close to the ocean, the lakes region, and the mountains. Any of the smaller towns around it are great too. I'd even look as far south as Newmarket, and maybe even Exeter.

I third that recommendation. I live in Barrington. Perfect convenient location
