Default what to see--visit to Wolfeboro in July

Hi-I will be attending a wedding in Wolfeboro in mid-July '08. I want to spend a week in the area as I have never been to NH or to Maine. Any suggestions on good places to visit?? (important note: we will have our twin 16 year old sons with us!)
We are not big on shopping or history. Looking forward to cute towns, beautiful scenery, outdoor activities, and good food. O yea, budget lodging suggestions are also welcome.
Thanks!!

Sadly, local institution Bailey's closed - but they now have an ice cream shop called Bailey's Bubble:

Baileys Bubble - Railroad Ave - Wolfeboro, NH

Wolfeboro is on the lake and to capture its essence you can rent a boat or at least take a boat tour. Another classic outing is to take the ferry to Meredith and spend the day at the arcade playing boardwalk type games and eating junk food.

On rainy days, there's a boat museum. I believe there's also an old train that runs through meredith. There are tons of antique stores in the area, including an antique mall in Meredith. Or you can drive to North Conway to hit the outlets - but be warned that in July it can be a zoo.

You'll be close to hiking in the Ossippees and White Mountains. If you want to drive, you can drive to the Flume or Franconia Notch. You can also drive through Center Sandwich and other beautiful, classic New England towns in the area. There are many smaller lakes in the area that would be much quieter, but some of the beaches are residents-only.

It's a beautiful area that has a huge tourist presence, so you'll find plenty to do! Have fun.

Check out Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, as well as Weirs Beach seeing that you have 16-year old sons. Both part of the Lakes region and in the vicinity of Wolfeboro.

Check out Wolfeboro Chamber of Commerce for a schedule of events....over the summer they have huge craft fairs on the property of Brewster Academy, antique boat show/races on the water, water skiing competitions, etc. You definitely should take a cruise on the Mount Washington...you will see the whole lake and hear about a bit of "history" about the area and the lake, etc. Great views and scenery. Garwoods and Joe Greens are restaurants right on the water in Wolfeboro and every Wed. night there is a musical performance at Cate Park by the water. If you like to swim and water ski, renting a ski boat for a day and going out and water skiing is definitely fun! You can also get up close to all the great homes and properties on the lake and check them out that way. There are many bays and inlet areas where you can anchor/moor your boat and swim, etc.

Enjoy!

I'll second the recommendations for Castle in the Clouds and Weirs Beach. Funspot is great, and there's also a drive-in movie theatre at Weirs Beach if you're into that. Meredith is also a nice town for eating and walking around.

Center Sandwich is a great little picturesque New England village, and if you drive a bit farther west on 113 towards Holderness, there's a a nice hiking trail up to Mt. Rattlesnake. It's a short, very easy hike and the views of Squam Lake (featured in the film "On Golden Pond") are well worth it. Also along 113 is Longhaul Farm, an organic farm with great food for sale, among other things.

For the best scenery, go a bit further north to the Kancamagus Highway (112 between Conway and Lincoln), and also to Franconia Notch along I-93 north of Lincoln. The Flume is a cool place to visit, and there's also a short but rewarding hike up Artists' Bluff across from the Cannon Mountain ski area, which gives you a nice view of Franconia Notch (also, you can take the gondola up to the top of Cannon).

There's also a nice hike along the Pemigewassett River that you can access from the exit for the Basin; it's a lot of fun to just take off your shoes and hike in the river (if the water's not too strong of course). You can find similar hikes and swimming holes in the eastern branch of the Pemi along the Kancamagus. You might also consider Loon Mountain in Lincoln, which has a gondola to the summit and various summer activities up there, including some neat caves.

The best views, however, are from the top of Mount Washington (not to be confused with the boat of the same name that services Lake Winnepesaukee). The Mt. Washington Auto Road is off Rte. 16 north of Jackson. The drive up to the highest peak in the northeast is well worth it on a clear day. Just dress warmly - it's pretty typical for the summit to be about 30 degrees cooler than the ground below.

If you're thinking about Maine, the most beautiful areas are located in the Mid-Coast and Downeast regions (east of Bath, esp. Wiscasset, Boothbay, Pemaquid Point, Camden, Acadia, etc.), but if these places are too far for you, I'd at least suggest Cape Neddick and Cape Elizabeth to see the lighthouses, and perhaps Old Orchard for a lively beach town if you're in the mood (of course the ocean water is a bit cold ). You could also go canoeing or kayaking in the Saco River, which is lots of fun.

Ok, hope that information wasn't too overwhelming
