My D lives up north, where the only local grocery is Price Chopper. She drives 30 minutes to hannafords and about once a month will make the one hour drive to Market Basket to stock up. She says what she buys at Market Basket for $100 would easily cost $150 at Price Gouger. Market Basket has the same prices at all their stores, so they don't take advantage of the lack of competition in certain areas or the tourist market.
If the prices are creeping up, I can't tell. Just got back from the Claremont NH store and, as usual, a full cart of groceries was easily a third less expensive than Price Chopper or Hannafords. (in my experience, anecdotal)
I'm not a fan of Aldi's simply because the place looks like a dump and they have zero help. There is nobody to ask for help if I can't find an item. I really love Roche brothers myself, but, mostly I just like to grab some organics and run out of the store unlike my SO who wants to buy everything in sight!!!
Following up on this topic a year and a half later, Market Basket fruit prices have skyrocketed. They used to have quite a few choices for 99 cents or $1.29 a lb. Average is now $2.50 a lb; grapes $3-$4 a lb. I'm shopping for fruits more and more at Hannaford. MB vegetables are still reasonable. Wages have not kept up with these higher prices.
We moved back to WI last year and we went to Market Basket a lot. They have an Aldi here where we are but I am not a great fan of them. Some things are ok but a lot I would not buy. Speaking of chickens and eggs--we have been buying eggs here for .49 a dozen for nearly 4 months now.
I love MB. Whenever I go somewhere else, I leave with sticker shock. They are also very good to there employees.
Unless you are a part time employee. You are treated just like any other retail person, with little regard. My wife has been jerked around with hours there for a while now. I don't know why she's still there.

They are great unless you try to quit in the middle of your shift:
One thing I like very much about MB is that they always have tons of check-out lines open. I feel like I never wait there, no matter how busy the store is. Hannifords? You might have three lanes, one of which is 15 items or less.
Aldi's is great for the basics. I am sad to see that all the NH Aldi's are in the very southern part of the state. I would love for them to open one in the Lakes Region. I just made an offer on a house there and I don't see any Market Baskets either on the northeast side of Lake Winnipesaukee, just Hannaford. Is that all there is up there? How does that one rate?
