We are considering a move to Newmarket.

Can anybody ring in who knows the area, lives there etc.?

I have heard GREAT and I have heard HORRIBLE.

Hard to make an educated decision with all that conflicting data.

Thanks!

You don't mention why you're moving there. Job relo?

It's a nice town - pretty. Average taxes for Seacoast, housing prices not extravagant (again - for the seacoast). Accessibility is a slight issue. It's on 108 which is a regular road. Rt 4 and 101 are the closest divided highways. Very small main street shopping - couple of restaurants, bakery cafe, a tavern and an old converted mill (at least I think it is converted - but to what I don't know). Stratham is the nearest major shopping. Just had a political scandal regarding town finances.

If you're in you're 20-30s with no kids you might well be bored. If you have kids then don't worry - who has time to be bored?

Can't speak for the schools. Valerie's dept.

Good town if you've taken a job at UNH. Much cheaper on taxes than Durham.

Default can't wait to leave

Hi I've been in Newmarket for 21 years. I must say I love living here and hate to leave, but there is no choice. My fixed income isn't making it here anymore. There are 2 tavern's here (major plusses to living here) as far as I'm concerned. both are a short walk. Newmarket is the DWI capital of N.H. due to cat + mouse games the cops play.) If you move here walk to your recreation. Neither is in converted mill space.

The Riverworks, catering largely to the flatlander transplants. prices are more expensive than elsewhere.

The Lamprey Tavern, good variety menu, service, prices. Occasionally you can catch some entertainment there with Jazz brunch on sunday. On Friday nights random dudes on guitar. brunch Saturday too, but no music then.its the 'local's' bar.

Big minuses are that the town is approaching city-sized municipal departments and not very well managed. Everything is still being run by 'somebody's cousin'.

I'd charachterize it as a small town thats dying a slow painful death. Much is gone with nothing new to repace it, since everyone lives in fear of our own potential! The town council successfully chased away a microbrewery that wanted to locate in available mill-space.

Once I was really ****ed-up after drinking all night and doing a power hour from 6-7 AM I walked from UNH to Newmarket and passed out in front of the Ace Hardware. It seemed really nice. The Ace hardware had a trivia contest and free popcorn. I passed some beautiful countryside with lots of little ponds. Fine place!
