I am getting closer to retirement than I realized and I would like information on Vermonth vs New Hampshire. Obviously, there are no school or employment concerns so those are not factors. We would love to be on a lake some place where we could drive comfortably to nice restaurants (10 to 15 miles M/L). Golf and skiing would be nice. I still play hockey so a rink would be great (but in five years - maybe not so much?). Taxes versus amenities is the question. I would assume that climate is too similar to be an issue. We are currently in Texas and are anxious to get out of this backwards state (and we live in Austin which is the only nice city in the state). Snow and cold is welcome by us. I haven't worn a sweater since I left Minnesota in 1982. Any help on areas in each state to investigate would be appreciated. How easy is it to fly to the Caribbean in February or March to celebrate getting through another winter?

Manchester has an airport that will take you anywhere with all the major airlines....

finding a place on a lake may be a little tough unless you have access to a lot of $$$.

lake front property has been snatched up by multi-millionaires. Mitt Romney's wife, for example, owns 5 homes on the family compound in Wolfeboro on Lake Winnipesaukee.

if you go WAYYYYY north, perhaps the Pittsburg area, it's possible you might find lake property for slightly less.

Lake Sunapee area might be what you're looking for, close to golf and skiing and still close enough to Concord for shopping and city life.

If you can afford it, I highly recommended the Lake Sunapee area (NH-Sunapee, New London, etc.) Beautiful small town with easy highway access to the major cities.

Given my political preferences, I would look for a place in Vermont. There is a lot of Vermont lakeshore on Lake Champlain. Be prepared for some incredible weather because the lake creates a local snowstorm condition until it freezes over.

That being said, I do not know much about the rest of Vermont except to say it is a strikingly beautiful place. But so is New Hampshire

The town of Croyden is 10 miles from Lake Sunapee and Lake Sunapee Ski area. It is also 20 minutes from Dartmouth College (town of Hanover) It is a beautiful area. There is also a private school nearby (Kimball Union) and Colby College all within a half hour away.

Vermont if you are a socialist or a smelly hippy. New Hampshire if you are a lover of liberty and want to be left alone.

Ditto on the Lake Sunapee area. Easy access to I89 and not far from I91. Manchester, Concord, Tilton, and Lebanon are all relatively close. Newbury and New London have reasaonable taxes.

With the current downturn there are some nice deals to be had on water.

Vermont doesn't have much water. I looked there for years and am very happy I stumbled upon the Sunapee area.

I live in New London and it's a nice town. I also lived in VT and currently have a small cottage in Barton, VT on Crystal Lake. That's WAY up north, 25 mi. south of Canada. I could NEVER afford lake real estate further south. New London, however has 2 lake beaches free to use for residents. Mt. Sunapee is about 15 minutes away for downhill skiing. As a nice plus, Dartmouth Coach runs buses to Logan/Boston for your flight fix. Keep in mind there are no international flights from Manchester. I am a left wing wacko ex-hippie, so I prefer the politics of Vermont, however if you get a nice pension you may have to pay income tax in VT, look it up to see if it applies to you.

HTH,
Mark

Daily, even. But at 58 years old, my wife still "nags" me to get a haircut!
