One of the reasons I'm excited to move back east is the lightening bugs
Have they been out this summer? Where have the sightings been?
Details, details..
Things are falling into place for us as far as the move goes. We'll be there before you know it!

Very few in my neighborhood this year. We used to love watching them in the grass and in the trees at a family member's farm in Auburn--they also are reporting fewer each year. On the other hand, we were stargazing in mid-coast Maine (an hour or so north of Portland) and there were HUNDREDS of flashing fireflies/lightening bugs. They were so bright and there were so many that they were actually interfering with our stargazing!!

I've seen far fewer than previous years but they are out.

I don't know if my memory is warped or if there really are a lot less lightning bugs around in recent years than there were back in the 70's/80's when I was growing up. I seem to remember the backyard being alight with them almost like a moving field of stars. We'd catch them in jars by the dozen, now we're lucky if we see a dozen in a night.

Sad to hear that there aren't many around.

Plenty in my backyard. I miss hearing the whip-o-wills. They were rare 20 years ago, even more so now.

The best lightning bug display I ever saw was 12 years ago in Virginia in the median strip tall grass along I-81... on the 4th of July. There were hundreds of them!
