The company you keep and the people you meet will all depend on your interests. We ski, hike, kayak and do a lot of home improvements. Meeting people with similar interests will be an adventure. The mixture of locals and people from away is truly what makes locations different. The best thing about Madison is it's location to all the winter outdoor activities. (Snowmobiles open up a whole new world.) The best thing about Wolfeboro/Tuftonboro is it's location to all the summer activities. Did you ever get up to Jackson? Lou hit the nail on the head about the back roads you'll quickly figure out the traffic patterns. Good luck with your search.

Next time you are up here, check out Moultonborough. Right next to Meredith but less busy and easier to avoid tourists. Also not too far from Hospital in Laconia and has super-low property taxes. I'd also check out Meredith Neck and other rural parts of Meredith as it is quite different than the town docks and all the action. The taxes are a bit higher but I love Sanbornton as the whole town feels rural but it is convenient to Meredith, Laconia shopping in Tilton, a 25-minute drop down the 93 to Concord and a 45-minute shot up the 93 to the Whites.
