I am looking for a tailor in New Hampshire (or nearby) that would be willing to take on a custom leather project. Hopefully someone has good experience with such a local shop?
Specifically I am looking to have a leather jacket made but its a little more intricate then your standard jacket. I'm willing to pay for a quality jacket made in the USA (rather then imported from heck knows where that labor is done these days!) and I have images of what I am looking for as a final product.
Finding a tailor or shoemaker today in many small cities and towns is like finding a needle in a haystack. And finding a shop where they can actually make a suit or dress or a pair of shoes from scratch is next to impossible. Those skills have disappeared.
The internet lists several custom leather tailors.
Where in NH do you live? Maybe Deerfield Leathers in Deerfield, NH can help you out. Not every tailor has a heavy duty sewing machine capable of sewing leather.
C & C leather in Peabody, MA makes custom motorcycle leathers, jackets, pants, chaps, vests gloves etc....I'm sure he could make just about anything you'd want....
A few (well quite a few) years ago, I found a craftsman in (I think it was Londonderry), right on Mammoth Rd (I.E. Rte 128, the 'heroin highway of NH') and I had him restore 12 chairs for me. Shortly north of the Londonderry school system. Bought the full skin hides from Canada (I have no idea why their cows are bigger than ours), fully tanned and processed, and he was a master craftsman in the art. Not sure if he is still there, but the finest experts never have to advertise.
I employed him 3 times, and his work was flawless. If I am back in the area, will get his name and contact info, if he still does it in his workshop there.
I have heard that one of the State Prison System has a leather working/furniture restoration program that takes in projects from outside. This may be worth investigating.
