Anyone have a good way to keep deer flies away while hiking? They're not quite in season yet, but they're coming.

I find they are more attracted to the higher points (shoulder & head) of dark moving objects. If I wear a white or khaki brimmed hat with a white t-shirt they bother me less than if I don't wear a hat or my shirt is dark.

My wife made some homemade insect repellent, and it kind of works, but not for very long. I got a can of Off! with Deet, and it works a lot better for a lot longer. I know Deet is possibly bad for you, but west nile is a lot worse for you.

I have used these with good results when around the house. downside is, you have to wear a hat all the time

They're attracted to the color blue, so don't wear that.

What I need is a pet dragonfly. When they start buzzing around me, the deer flies disappear

I take a piece of duct tape, run it around my hat adhesive side out. You need a hat with a brim that runs the full circumference. It works surprisingly well.
