They do "smell" the interior of car. They do look inside (from the outside) looking for anything and everything. Not sure what sophisticated electronic "sniffing" devices used nor if all is on video cameras.
Some use a License Plate Reader also.
Note: They usually have a van/truck with a mobile laboratory. And sometimes a mobile "court". To quickly take away the "usual suspects".
Make sure your inspection sticker is up to date. And check all of your exterior lights.
Again, all is posted before the road blocks. Time to read the local newspapers again.
mobile laboratory? mobile "court"??? Holy ---p, Batman! Is this the USA, or East Germany in the 1950's?
And this is the state where many people move to to have the utmost in "freedom" & "liberty", etc. (?)
(I'm being bombastic of course in saying all that. But it does sound pretty extreme. And of course no one should drive drunk.) I've been so paranoid about all that--for years--that I worry about having 1 beer--let alone 2--at a bar or restaurant, & driving.
As far as: "Make sure your inspection sticker is up to date. And check all of your exterior lights."
For the most part no.. we now have constitutional carry, we have no adult helmet law, we have no seat belt law..etc etc as with any other state we have our occasional governmental idiocy, we work through or around it
Looks like nearby Maine held a sobriety checkpoint this week and met with drivers yelling thank you.
Sunday September 17. 2017
ELIOT, Maine — The Eliot and South Berwick Police Departments conducted a joint sobriety checkpoint on Route 236 Thursday, Sept. 14.
While a very few expressed their discontent at the delay in their commute that was surpassed by the overwhelming encouragement and support we received from most,” said Eliot Police Chief Elliott Moya. “It was encouraging to hear folks shouting, ‘thank you,’ as they passed by.” Eliot, So. Two police sobriety checkpoints Saturday night screened 453 vehicles, netting four arrests and eight summonses, state police said Sunday.
In Gilford, a checkpoint on Route 11 screened 261 vehicles. Police arrested three people for driving while intoxicated and issued five tickets for possession of marijuana and two for open container of alcohol violations.
In Bow, a checkpoint on Route 3A screened 192 vehicles. Police made one arrest and issued one ticket for possession of marijuana.
Charged with driving after suspension and suspended registrations was Jessica Harvey, 28, of Boscawen
Another total waste of taxpayer $$
Texting has overtaken DWI as the major cause of accidents and deaths

453 vehicles stopped, only 3 DWI were found.
Waste of taxpayer money? 1,2 or 3 of those 3 DWI drivers of 453 drivers, if not stopped, could have killed many innocent people that night.
Did a google news search of Maine crashes the evening of the Maine sobriety checkpoint for in that area of Maine: There were no Maine fatality crashes involved a DWI driver.
Same with the Portsmouth NH sobriety checkpoint, There were no Portsmouth NH area fatality crashes involving a DWI driver.
Deaths from drunk or POT drivers that did not occur make the sobriety checkpoints well worth the taxpayer money.
Incidentally, when a single DWI driver kills someone on a roadway;many first responders have to go to the scene, many police, many firefighters, many state officials have to go to the scene, state workers for road repairs, etc. Many hours of OT need to be paid. Than it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars in court costs to prosecute a DWI driver. ALL very expensive to taxpayers.
Most of the deadly accidents are caused by people who are hard core alcoholics and no number of safety checks are going to keep them off the road.Unfortunately, most of the people caught in these roadside stings are pretty much innocent working folks, housewives and others who have only had a couple of drinks after work or with friends and have their lives ruined at these stops..08 has almost no effect on your motor skills. It was a ridiculously low standard accepted after intense pressure from activists.
