Comet, looking at some of the facts provided by city-data (a great resource by the way!) Pembroke in general is more of a blue collar town, with mainly HS graduates. On the other hand, Amherst has a higher than state average number of residents with bachelors and masters degrees, which would translate into quite a different level of income. I'd also be interested to hear other's opinions on this!

Amherst is absolutely more upscale than Pembroke. No doubt. I've lived in NH for 34 years

Also, if one is deciding between Bedford and Amherst, it really depends on where they will be working and if they mind a commute. We currently live in Goffstown and at one point wanted to move to either Bedford or Amherst. My husband was working in Hudson at the time so he would need easy access to Route 3. Most of the homes we found in Amherst would have really extended his commute. Bedford is a little more commuter friendly to most places. However, both towns are beautiful, have great schools and are upscale.

Default Airport

I worked at the end of the long runway (North/South) and always was aware (as a hobby) of the air traffic. The N/S runway is used much more often then the E/W runway which would be over Bedford. I would also watch the planes from my West Side Manchester residence and it was not that noticeable.

My cuz is a Doctor at Elliot Hospital and has a nice BIG house in Bedford. Bedford is very nice. If you can afford it - go for it.

east2west is on a distinguished road
We live in Bedford, not too far from Amherst. Looked at Amherst as well, but decided with all the traffic on 101, it was just too far of a commute. Bedford is a very nice community and everyone is not wealthy. There are a lot of very nice reasonably priced homes and with the housing market in such bad shape, you could probably pick up a nice home that will hopefully one day rebound. I have to use the Manchester airport often and Bedford is very convenient to the airport (as long as it's a very early flight, before the am commute). We have no airport noise at all or traffic noise where we are on the western end of Bedford. Very country out where we are and very peaceful. You will love New Hampshire.
