Bad areas in Bedford????
Hi everyone,
My husband and I (and our 4 children) will be moving to Bedford, NH in June. We are going out there to buy a house in a couple weeks and I was wondering about the Airport noise in Bedford. Are there any areas that get the air traffic worse than others? Are there any other things I should be aware of in certain areas of the town? The only person we know in the area is our realtor and so I am just wanting to find out all the little things about the town before we buy. Thanks

I haven't seen too much I didn't like about Bedford. Seems to be a great town. I'm sure there is noise on the east side of town along Rt.3 and the river, but I'm not sure of the landing and take off patterns of Manchester AP. The traffic along Rt. 3 can be heavy closer to Manchester, but the rest of town seems to be ok. It's in my top three towns for relocation. Let us know how you make out. Welcome to the forum, stroebel6!!

Welcome to the forum stroebel. Actually your Realtor should be a great resource for which parts of the town have issues, including the take-off/landing patterns of the various runways at MHT, what the busiest time(s) of day might be, etc. I'm sure if you ask, he or she will show you how to navigate the very cool map feature in your MLS Listing Cart. Here's a little map of MHT airport that shows the orientation of the runways. The teal numbers are houses that are on the MLS. Which one do you think *may* be affected more by airplane noise?

Hi Stroebel! Good luck in your move! We looked in Bedford when we were house shopping too. Very nice town. At the time we looked, the homes that met our criteria were near enough to rt 101 that there was more road noise (and road work noise-are they widening rt 101 up there? or rt 3? there was some major road construction underway back in 8/07) than anticipated, but no air noise at all. It's probably not the norm for the entire town, just in the locations of the homes we looked at, but since you voiced a concern about air noise, I thought I'd bring it up. You'll get a feel for it yourself when you are looking. Again, good luck with your move, especially with house hunting!

Thank you for your responses. And Valerie, thank you for that map. I had not seen a map of the runways like that. Now I can tell the direction and if they land in the flight path. I appreciate all your input.

You're welcome... Looking in Bedford, I'm surprised that you haven't seen that map before. I find it's best to share as much info (good and bad) as possible, especially when working with folks from out of the area, so that people can make informed decisions. I wish you all the best

Look in Amherst, too
There really are no "bad" areas, but I would look in Amherst as well. I grew up there, it is much more beautiful and quaint than Bedford, MUCH better high school, one of the greatest little downtowns in NH....look in Amherst! Good luck !

Yes, most air port noise is in Londonderry, where the flight path is over!

Shortlid, Londonderry is getting the lions share of airport noise these past several months while MHT is doing the work on the east/west runway. Work is ongoing, 28 (south willow street in Manch) has been rerouted, but much work remains... Once that runway work is completed hopefully Londonderry's noise factor will be reduced (sorry Bedford...)
AND if you (any of you!) are out and about in Amherst, stop into Moultons for the best lunch ever--veggie wrap, some made in NH goodies, good food to keep you going

Valerie C would you say Amherst is more upscale than Pembroke?
