How close can sex offenders live near a school in NH?
I have been trying to find some sort of information on how close sex ofenders can live near a school in New Hampshire. My child attends a school where sex offenders live nearby. A school most children can walk. I do not allow my child to walk! You would think that finding such information would be easy, but I can't find anything. Help!

Hi, I suggest that you contact the local police chief and/or state trooper barrack to get that information and if that attempt is not successful, then contact the State Attorney office in your county...and someone there should be able to tell you....lastly, you might be able to find out through the victim advocate office within the department of corrections....just some suggestions.....good luck!

I'm not sure, but a man from Dover is suing the town because he claims he can not find a place to live that is not near a school or a daycare. Dover's law is 2500 feet.
It may vary by town, because Derry complained when a sex offender moved next door to the montesorri school. It was legal.

Sex Offendor lists
It does vary by town, and let me tell you it's becoming more difficult to keep track of each towns requirements. An fellow real estate agent is in danger of losing their license because they unknowingly were involved in a transaction in which a sex offender bought a house too close to a school. I guess in addition to asking potential buyers what type of house they would like, what's most important to them, we'll have to be asking "Oh, by the way, are you on the registered sex offenders list?" Talk about uncomfortable subject matter!
Its a scary world out there--here is one tool/website that may help:
Nationwide site: " Megan's Law Sex Offender Registries by State"
Here's another: Find registered and convicted sex offenders and predators
I think the is the best site, since it's map-based. Simply input your address, and the map will pop up, from there you can easily click on each offender to see their history, picture, etc.
NH site: Division of State Police, New Hampshire Department of Safety (to use this one, type in your town, hit submit, click on name(s) for further info, picture, etc)

When talking about registered sex offenders, I think there's something that should also be kept in mind - Sometimes a person may have to register as a sex offender if, say, he was 18, had consensual sex with his 16-year-old girlfriend, then was charged with 'statutory rape.'
I don't know if that's a frequent occurrence in NH, but we saw it happen a couple of times in NYS. When looking at the sex offender registry, don't just go by the numbers, look and see what the offense was for, the ages, etc.
I don't think the example given in my first paragraph is all that common, but it does happen and just something to be aware of when looking.....

NH's sex offender list only includes people who were involved with minors. It does not include ALL sex offenders.

Is 16 considered a minor in NH? It was in NYS. So, just to clarify in my head - would the situation in the first paragraph in my previous posting be included in the NH registry? Thanks!

yes, I believe it would be included because they are minors until 18.
