Default Hollis/Nashua NH Flooding Question (swampy area by Pennichuck pond)

Hello!

My wife and I are reasonably new to New Hampshire and are looking at a home in Hollis that's right on the border of the northwest swampy area by Pennichuck pond. Is anyone familiar with the Pennichuck watershed, particularly this area, and how it's held up with the flooding in '06 and '07? I've checked with FEMA but can't find complete/usable data on the area.

In particular the home is off Meadow drive, these "swampy" areas are new to me and I'm not sure if they are shrinking, getting larger, flooding frequently- or what.

Thank you much for any input any of you may have!

-Brian

Hi Brian, welcome to the NH Forum. My family and I are going to be relocating to NH from So Cali at some point. Flooding has been a big concern of ours as well. I have looked on some of the maps from FEMA, and I couldnt really understand them. Our resident realtor ValerieC might be able to help you, as far as what is in a flood zone. Everyone on this forum is a wealth of knowledge, not to mention very sweet people. I am sure someone will read your post and help if they can.

Hi z!
I found this article which might help you, and I really hope I'm allowed to post this link here: Cabinet.com | The CABINET PRESS INC | Covering Milford, Wilton, Amherst, Lyndeborough, Greenville, Mont Vernon, Jaffrey, Mason, Hollis, Brookline, Merrimack and Bedford, NH.
I live in the south part of Hollis, and only just moved here last Aug., so I can't tell you first hand what conditions were like in the area you're interested in in 06. Ames Rd. has been closed due to flooding the entire time we've lived here, and one end of Witches Spring was closed (also due to flooding)when we were looking at homes in July.
Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Thank you much, it's right off Witches Brook and it much closer/lower to the hydric area than the satellite photos showed (which means the swamp is also expanding); so we've (unfortunately) ruled it out.

Also, thank you for the welcome to the board.

khgeisler is on a distinguished road
Brian,

Wow how lucky to see this post, I am looking at a house in this area. Would the address have been "67". Going to look at this house again but am very concerned about the close swamp area.

Karl

Karl, I'd be worried about flooding and bugs. Also the house needs A LOT of interior work and I was concerned about how close the swamp was to the home in regards to foundation as well (check the right side of the home- if facing from front yard...its VERY close to the swamp- not good with a slab unless its down onto solid ground).

Anyway, not sure how handy you are- but that's one house I'd have an engineer look at as well as study the flood maps.
