Hey ya'll, I'm currently living in the horrid state of Connecticut at the moment. Some quick background, I am a registered nurse, right leaning, outdoorsy person, 2A lover, and eventually want a plot of land to raise some chickens, ride my ATV, have an outdoor shooting range, and lower taxes (well, who doesn't). I currently rent in CT. My parents own a home here, and their property taxes have neared 11k now... on top of the myriad of other taxes this state nails you with. I am considering a move to NH, specifically the northern area around the White Mountains. My girlfriend and I have visited numerous times having stayed in Tamworth and Lincoln in the northern part and Salisbury in the central-west part of the state. We liked the northern part much better. I had a great convo with the owner of The Village Gunstore in Whitefield about the area. I understand that the winters are "worse" than what we find in CT, but I do not mind it. I ski/snowboard and snowmachine. Anyhoo, can anybody name some decent hospitals in the northern part of the state that would be worthwhile to look into for employment? I do not mind commuting too much, my current commute to work is approx 40 min or so.
Some other info... we looked at Texas, SC, and I lived in WV for a bit.

While we don't live there full time yet (we have a place in Bethlehem) and currently live in CT as well ( we plan to retire to our place in Bethlehem in a few years). I have heard good things about Littleton Regional hospital which is quite close to Whitefield.

Post As always, rent first while you hunt for acreage to buy

I strongly recommend visiting the whites (e.g. Tamworth) in February before committing to a move to that part of the state.

I'd also suggest finding a job and renting nearby, use your days off to look for the right plot of land, with or without a house. When choosing a place to buy, consider your access to major roads -- if you're way off the highway, the road to your house may be a low priority for plowing, this can be a real issue in major snowstorms, especially if you aren't doing 9-5 shifts -- you might leave for work not knowing if you'll be able to get back until the plows finally get around to clearing smaller streets. Even AWD isn't sufficient in the worst of storms.

Less common, but still a concern, is flooding -- also take into account which streams and rivers you need to cross (to get to work, etc) and the condition of the bridges and culverts on your main and backup route.

There's a limited number of hospitals in the north country, I haven't heard of any of them being a bad place to work. I'd definitely check glassdoor and indeed.

Murk Mags, I too considered TX, but NH won out for me.

In regards to employment at hospitals, I agree with the above poster about Indeed or Glass Doors or other websites.

Regarding north of the Whites, it's a fun area and I'm up there dozens of times a year. It's becoming an ATV mecca, and you can find properties with direct-access to ATVing, or within a short ride to ATV trails. There are less jobs north of the Whites, but property values are lower so you get more bang for your buck. Generally speaking, yes, winters are harsher, but in my opinion, it's not much to write home about that it might be a few degrees warmer south of the Whites, or have a few mph knocked off the windchill. Also, the past few winters it seems like many of the storms came from the south and hammered the southern part of the state more than the northern part.

North of the Whites is very laid back. I call it the land that time forgot. Hardly ever any traffic up there, no billboards and chains and franchises littering the landscape... it's nice, that's for sure.

The hospitals up there are all pretty small and may have limited openings (although they probably don't have a huge applicant pool either). I'd get my resume out to all of them. Is your GF looking for employment too?

I read in the local free newspaper the hospital in Colebrook is looking for nurses and is offering a $3000 signing bonus!

Thank you everybody for the responses. I plan on heading back up sometime after Thanksgiving again. I am aware that NH can be remote, as this is what I want. I plan on buying a truck and snowmachine if I do move up there, that way I can plow my way to my destination or just hop on the snow machine and go.
And to the user that posted the hospitals... yes, I did google them. I wanted to get opinions on what people thought of the hospitals up there. There's no knowledge like first hand knowledge and whatnot.
Levi, thanks for the link to the site. I will be in touch.

I live in Littleton and have heard really good things about Littleton Regional Hospital. I have heard mixed things about Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster (some had good things to say, others had horrible experiences but those experiences were many years ago). The hospitals up here are very small. Littleton and Weeks are both 25 bed critical access hospitals. They provide a lot of the primary care in the community, specialist appointments etc and can stabilize people, but frequently send people to Dartmouth once stable of their needs are severe. Weeks Regional is starting construction on a massive new Patient Care Center right now.

Healthcare jobs seem really easy to come by right now. They do not have enough medical personnel up here to fill all the job openings, so they can get pretty desperate to hire people. I do not know anyone working at Littleton Regional or Weeks right now, but I know several people who volunteer at Littleton Regional and have great things to say about volunteering there. I do know several people who work at Androscoggin Valley Hospital in the Berlin/Gorham area. They were hired almost instantly (at least one of them was only visiting on vacation and decided to put an application in because she loved the area and was hired within the week). I have heard good things about working there.

In addition to the smaller hospitals scattered around the North Country (Littleton, Lancaster, Woodsville, Colebrook, and Berlin), the bigger hospitals that people go to are Dartmouth or Speare in Plymouth. I have heard that Speare is a nice place to work, and I believe it is a bit bigger than the hospitals up here. Plymouth is about 45 minutes south of the Littleton area and isn't North Country, but if you like the Lincoln area that is the hospital for that area and would be an easy commute from anywhere down in the Lincoln area.

Wolfeboro has Huggins Hospital, and Huggins also has a few satellite clinics as well scattered around the Lakes Region. Try nursing homes; last I heard, the nursing home in Ossipee needs nurses. Also look into clinics such as the White Mountain Medical Center in Wakefield.

One thing I noticed is that if you live on a school bus route, the roads are kept plowed and clear really, really well. At least they are in Ossipee.
