Default Christmas Lights and Celebrations!

Lancaster also used to have Sam's Market (I think that was the name) with a huge selection of penny candy (at least it seemed huge to me!). One barometer of what a potentially wonderful small town for me would be if the community has a comprehensive Christmas Light or celebration Program! On the other hand I know some communities that really do little to celebrate Christmas but would rather pour their decoration resources into the celebration of Halloween! For me Halloween is fun but is also really just a freak show whereas Christmas truly generates more goodness and love.

So when I ask "What Small Town in NH most closely represents or reminds you of small town America ?" I would want this Town to have a very quaint and genuine traditional Christmas Celebration!

I remember going to Sam's before school to get some penny candy. We would look on the ground around the phone booth on Main Street to see if anyone had dropped any change. We usually were lucky enough to find a little bit of money. Sometimes we found a whole quarter! Back then that would buy a LOT of candy. Mint Juleps were two for a penny.

One thing I remember about Lancaster was the Christmas lights that decorated Main Street during the holiday season. It seemed really magical to me, to go ice skating after school and to walk home in the dark, with the Christmas lights all glowing.

Hey Asta! Nice to "meet" another Sam's Market shopper. My dad, who's a cheapskate, taught us to walk with our heads down on Main Street in Lancaster looking for spare change (he still does it!). I found a $20 bill once. I felt like a millionaire.

What era were you a Sam's shopper?

I used to love Lancaster's Christmas lights, too. They used to have light decorating contests (don't know if they still do).

I was a Sam's shopper in the late 60's and early 70's. I also went to the North End Market when I was on my way to the pool.

I also used to like Halloween in Lancaster. I remember painting the store windows with Halloween scenes, and then going to the Community House for games. Back then when we went trick or treating we had lots of fun, and we didn't have to have our parents tag along because we didn't have to worry about getting into trouble!

Gosh, Asta, you're really bringing back memories for me. I, too, probably frequented Sam's in the late 60s/early 70s. Then we moved to the other end of town and North End Market became our spot for candy. Remember they made "Italians" in hot dog rolls and kept them in a little basket at the check-out counter (unrefrigerated, mind you!)? My parents still buy their fresh Thanksgiving turkeys from North End.

I used to HATE the Colonel Town pool...it was always SO cold. My parents had to force me to take swimming lessons. Funny, I always preferred pond/lake swimming (we had a camp at Martin Meadow Pond) than swimming in that pool! I loved all the events at the Colonel Town - from the concerts, to Halloween, to school dances, and using the game room downstairs. I was always envious of the Leaver kids getting to live right there.

What about Four Dorrs? Did you used to go there to eat or get ice cream? My most memorable outings to Four Dorrs drive-in were when my parents would pile us all into the station wagon, leave the back window either open or the tailgate thingy open, and we'd head there for burgers & fries, which were oh so much better than any modern-day McDonalds. And the soft serve ice cream was to die for. Of course, now you can get soft serve at any corner store, but back then it was such a novelty in Lancaster.

What about the Rialto? I loved going to movies there. The seats were awfully uncomfortable, but the atmosphere was so cool. Mr. Piche always looking so stern and his mother so sweet as she popped corn.

Thanks for kick starting the memories, Asta.

This is exactly what I am looking for also!!! For the first time in our lives we get to choose were we want to live instead of just being put there. We definitely want small town NH with that quaint genuine traditional Christmas...Thomas Kinkade/Norman Rockwell kind of place!!!

Comet and country...I truely hope you both find that perfect place!!!
And to everyone else looking for their perfect place I hope you find it as well!!!

newhampshiregirl and asta....Thank you for sharing those memories with us!!!! (Are those places still in existance today??)
