\\Thank you seamusnh!! Yes Mont Vernon is a very attractive small town and IMHO does fit the quaint Norman Rockwell Small Town America!
I think this town is in the top 95 percentile of a best possible town for a retro Diner!
Here are some pics I found online below!

Comet, where do you find these gorgeous pics? They are absolutely beautiful! I live in Louisiana where we don't really get distinct seasons and I just adore seeing pics of the different seasons in NH! Thanks for posting them!

Stay on the west side of I-93. North of the lakes. Forget the big lakes, they are a freaking nightmare. I'd look for a town with a small lake, stream or small pond close by.
Check out Haverhill, NH. on Google Earth. Around there is all nice stuff. IMO

Mont Vernon is very lovely - my mother used to live there on the corner of Purgatory Rd (now there's a large house closer to the corner than her little one). She had an incredible view down the hill! Unfortunately that hill is also fairly steep and there were times when snow storms came up during that day that she couldn't get up the hill to get home at night - sometimes she just left her car and hiked up the hill.
The center of town is very cute, also.

You know Comet, Mont Vernon is one hat I never even thought of for your quaint town. The view going down the hill toward Amherst is just AMAZING!! I can see, Wanna, where you Mom might have trouble getting back up the hill Love the town hall, love the library! Is that a picture of the cemetary? I"ve never been there in the fall--must do that this year, as well as get a picture of the view just before Mont Vernon Road. You know, the diner could be in Mont Vernon, or even Milford just down the road... you may be on to something there

Here are some shots of Wilton. I don't know how to do nice thumbnails, so you'll just have to cope with fullsize pics.
 Frye's Measure Mill
(actually, this website has some of the most gorgeous pics of NH and a few VT!! www.chesterfieldoutdoors.com/.../fall1.htm (broken link)
 downtown Wilton

apparently at least in 2006 they had a Halloween parade!
There's bunches more if you google-images for wilton, nh - I won't take up more bandwith, but there's some really beautiful photos.

I have to agree - Mont Vernon is a great little town. The views are FANTASTIC, and it is part of the Amherst School District, which I've heard is one of the best in the state. Also, please correct if I'm wrong here ... but I do believe the taxes in Mont Vernon are cheaper than Amherst and even Bedford now. .
I visited last March and I LOVED IT THERE! It is on our top 10 list...it does keep growing though! So many cute little towns in NH - what a great state!
