40 years ago Derry was 8,000 residents - now, as others have pointed out, it's very built up - however, there are still areas of Derry that are country-like
lol at Val - I remember when the owner of Costume Gallery operated out of the basement of his house.
"Just curious Buck, does the iron impact the viscosity or color of the water? Can you taste it?"
it was awful! I was spoiled by Derry's really good water. Within 3 days, my toilets and dishwasher were stained pink. It definitely has a taste. The water softener stopped the staining and the taste is not bad now.

One more thing...even though Derry has grown, I still felt like small town. I lived in East Derry and the main road leads you past the East Derry Store, the old fire station, the beautiful church and leads you down to the circle and Pinkerton Academy.
At night, I could hear the church bells from the church in East Derry AND the church next to Pinkerton (when the wind was just right).
My property bordered conservation land on Adams Pond Road. I highly recommend anything in that area.

Hi Buck! I take it you no longer live in Derry? I found out that many wells in the Derry Hempstead area have a high Iron content mainly because of the shallow water tables and then rain water infiltrates into the wells and that usually will create a chemistry that yields the growth of iron bacteria. A bacteria test can usually indicate that! However, sometimes I found there are even several water tables you have to drill through to get your water free of iron. My well in the mountains was about 275 feet and we just drank it from the tap! Best water I ever had!

Hanover
Was curious if Hanover would fit the definition of a great small town? Or maybe not because of Dartmouth?

A very nice drive is going south on 302 from Littleton into south on 10 to Hanover! It actualy will only take about 1.5 hours but there are a lot of nice small towns to stop in. Lisbon, was once a thriving lumber town but now looks like something out of a Stephen King Novel.
But I think Littleton will always thrive, just as Hanover will! Here is the Google Map Link

A & I drove over to Peterborough just for grins. We stopped and had pie & coffee at the Peterborough Diner down by the river. Then we shopped for some cut oats in a health food store. It was too cold for much of a walk around town. Peterborough is a very good example of a large New England town or small city.
