Thanks jaykat5!

Yes Newmarket is a great small town! Just up the road from Exeter and a stones throw away from Portsmouth!

Does it have a railroad train by any chance?

I would think a town like Newmarket would certainly have property you could zone for having horses! Sandbar I also believe you may want to check this town out more, as if your husband likes fishing he would probably get his fill because the Lamprey River runs right through the town! And I heard it makes for great fishing! But I am not sure about the hunting season there especially for birds.

Thank you Mr Comet! I did look up Newmarket online and it does look like a bedroom community for Portmouth and Exeter. And I did not see much if any real estate for sale.

I think the town has been incorporated since the late 1700's and that is why I thought you may find some good acreage, however I could understand how urban sprawl can gobble up small towns!

Although Exeter to the south of Newmarket is much bigger it still has a good old small town feeling as long as you stay in the town. But the outskirts of Exeter have your typical strip malls and so on!

Default Newmarket

It appears that Newmarket is not that far from Concord! But I think my husband really wants a place in the Mountains like Littleton.

I would have to agree with you there Mrs Sandbar. If your husband is an avid field and stream man than he would definitely like Littleton better. But I have no idea what your husband does for a living!>???? In Newmarket you are much closer to major population centers! So depending on your financial situation I guess you will have to make that determination! In any case, good luck!

Sandbar - As Comet said, if your husband really likes Littleton, one of your main concerns will be employment, if he's still working (I can't remember now, if he will be working or retired, sorry!!!).

My husband, and 3 others where he worked, were laid off back in November and the place he worked has now cut the remaining employees back to a 3-day work week. During the time DH was not working, he could not find a job. Granted, it was the holiday season, so things were slow and it was tough finding anyone to even talk to. He went to 2 employment agencies as well as made the rounds to various businesses and there was nothing.

Luckily, a place where he had put in a resume called him last week and he was hired and started today! We were fortunate that I have a job that covered our major expenses for the time he was out of work, but it was getting "tight" - we didn't have to hit our "emergency fund", but we were getting close to having to decide whether to stay here or move elsewhere, which was pretty scary.

A friend of ours who worked somewhere other than where DH worked, was in the same position and out of work for about the same amount of time - he finally found a job last week, as well, so some places are hiring again, but for awhile, it was pretty scary for him and his SO as well.

The Littleton area is a beautiful area and it does have many pluses, but employment is not one of them. If you're husband will be working, make sure he has a job lined up before he gets here.

If my DH had a nursing degree, was a lab tech or was able to work in a hospital environment, he would have had an easier time as the hospital (and those around us) were hiring, but DH doesn't have the schooling in the medical field and definitely does not have the stomach to work in a hospital

What is your definition of "far"? Do you mean time or distance? Because the distance is not extremely far but you are on Rt 4 and not on a major hwy like 93. Depending on what part of Concord you are coming from it could be 40 minutes to an hour maybe more. If you come from East Concord, near Loudon(106) or right by 393, then your ride would be much quicker than Penacook or South Concord. I say this because my husband did the Concord to Dover(next to Newmarket) commute on Rt 4 for many years before we moved and Rt 4 is not always the greatest-especially if you get behind someone who refuses to do anywhere near the speed limit. He came from Penacook and it could many times take an hour and five or 10 minutes if he hit enough slowpokes or motorhomes in the summer. Also-if you are doing the reverse commute- Newmarket to Concord in the morning and C-N in the evening, there will be a great deal of traffic when all the state workers are commuting. Not sure if that applies to you , but something to think about if you plan on doing the commute.
