My husband, and 3 others where he worked, were laid off back in November and the place he worked has now cut the remaining employees back to a 3-day work week. During the time DH was not working, he could not find a job. Granted, it was the holiday season, so things were slow and it was tough finding anyone to even talk to. He went to 2 employment agencies as well as made the rounds to various businesses and there was nothing.
Luckily, a place where he had put in a resume called him last week and he was hired and started today! We were fortunate that I have a job that covered our major expenses for the time he was out of work, but it was getting "tight" - we didn't have to hit our "emergency fund", but we were getting close to having to decide whether to stay here or move elsewhere, which was pretty scary.
A friend of ours who worked somewhere other than where DH worked, was in the same position and out of work for about the same amount of time - he finally found a job last week, as well, so some places are hiring again, but for awhile, it was pretty scary for him and his SO as well.
The Littleton area is a beautiful area and it does have many pluses, but employment is not one of them. If you're husband will be working, make sure he has a job lined up before he gets here.
If my DH had a nursing degree, was a lab tech or was able to work in a hospital environment, he would have had an easier time as the hospital (and those around us) were hiring, but DH doesn't have the schooling in the medical field and definitely does not have the stomach to work in a hospital

Happy your hubby landed a new job Dare! Times are tough all over! I gues everyone wants to live up in God's Country where you are!
Personally I think Littleton has everything and is so far shielded from many of the elements from the lower NE States!

In certain areas, yes, I guess Littleton is "shielded" from some things. The housing prices were never "out of sight" to begin with, so there was not the huge spike and then drastic decline like other areas had; according to a realtor, houses are still selling, but slower than before. We have seen more "bank-owned" houses on the market than previously, but that's true pretty much all over the place now, unfortunately
The Opera House is being renovated and I *think* it's supposed to be "functional" by spring or summer. The new police station is moving along on schedule and actually on budget! The food co-op is also moving right along. Not sure what the status is of the "Main Street Project" - it was supposed to start in the spring, I think, then they decided to put it up for another bid once some prices started declining, so I don't know what that status is, I should probably look it up in the minutes from the meetings, but I haven't yet.
The population has grown since we've been here, but it still has a nice "community feel" which is nice. As far as I can tell from the radio and newspaper, crime is still low, which is also a plus.
Now....if only someone could accurately predict our weather! We were expecting 1-3 inches of snow yesterday and ended up with 7-8 inches of the white stuff! One thing I've learned since living up here is never to rely on ANY forecast - you just have to wait and see what you wake up to and what develops during the day! Weather-wise, though, we have been spared the tornados, ice storms, flooding, etc. that other areas of the state endured....

Other than being a weatherman/woman, name one other job (government positions don't count) where you can be wrong 100% of the time and not get fired.

I know-amazing isn't it? All this technology and weather forecasting has become worse. I wonder if meterologists even learn about weather anymore or just how to read the 1,000 different "computer models" that they talk about in their forecasts.

It is difficult enough to just get the weather for tomorrow correct can you believe how some people believe these United Nation's Climate Fear Mongers??? When they try to scare us about the human effects on the climate! With Predictions sea levels will soon engulf Florida and all of our coastal cities!!!!! Truly unbelievable how some can believe this garbage!!!!

I just figure that's why we have windows I think my sinuses predict storms better than the weather people do - they always feel "full" a day before we get anything more than a couple of inches!

Hi Dare!
Actually I believe Littleton has a Micro Climate of its own, is if you go towards route 10 near the Conn. River you are in a completely different climate! Also it could be raining in Littleton and snowing right down the road in Woodstock or opposite!

If you come from East Concord, near Loudon(106) or right by 393, then your ride would be much quicker than Penacook or South Concord. I say this because my husband did the Concord to Dover(next to Newmarket) commute on Rt 4 for many years before we moved and Rt 4 is not always the greatest-especially if you get behind someone who refuses to do anywhere near the speed limit. He came from Penacook and it could many times take an hour and five or 10 minutes if he hit enough slowpokes or motorhomes in the summer. Also-if you are doing the reverse commute- Newmarket to Concord in the morning and C-N in the evening, there will be a great deal of traffic when all the state workers are commuting. Not sure if that applies to you , but something to think about if you plan on doing the commute.
|
Thank you Nicolem for that information because my husband is a contractor and really does not like traffic and I am sure he will not want to sit in h is truck for 45 minutes when up near Littleton he could most surely have less traffic!!!
