I am out every day and see plenty of people on the trails in the snow/ice/wind/cold. To keep on topic, I'll add that having local safe (not gang infested) trails and open spaces throughout NH's small towns is something to be protected and preserved. In more suburban areas of the US this just does not exist, unless you want to call contrived and overly planned paved paths through densely populated residential areas trails.

Well let's just pray Lisa, that the undesirables still find the frigid air of New Hampshire as a major deterrent!

Sandbar - I don't know what they charge up here, but I know back in NY we had one that charged $5,000 per year for a membership (single) and another that charged $3,000 per year for a membership (single).....so this may be another "expensive is relative" area, but I can't say because I've never looked up the memberships in Bethlehem

Hi Dare & sandbar! I did check out the Bethlehem Golf & Country Club and it actually is only less than One Thousand a year for a Family!
Bethlehem Country Club --Golf in the White Mountains of New Hampshire
But maybe Sandbar you may be thinking of the Maplewood Country Club which is also in Bethlehem. Yes I think they are more pricey and I am not sure of the initial joining fees. You may want to give them a call. But what is most important about both of these Clubs is the fact that they are situated in such a beautiful surroundings!

You could check out Littleton NH. I will have to say that I am somewhat jaded by this "rose colored classes" view of small towns. So many people have this romantic view of everybody wanting to help everybody out but I have to say sadly people just love to spread lies and knock you down a peg or two It is sad ... maybe I am wrong though

I personally think you have to be realistic and realize there are good things and bad things no matter where you live. Are small towns perfect? Of course not, but neither are big cities or medium sized towns. No matter where you live, you will find "good" and "bad" - both being relative to what you believe to be good or bad (how's that for a convoluted thought? )...but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
As transplants, we've met many nice, "real" people - we've also met a few who are nice to your face, but look out when you turn your back.....again, you will find that everywhere. We choose to interact with with the "real" people and have let our contacts go with the others.
No place is "utopia".....everywhere has problems. Everywhere has people who feel the need to put others down to make themselves feel better. Overall, we've met more "genuine" people here in Littleton than we have the other type.....we also have pretty good internal "BS-meters", as well

Ditto on all above Dare! I guess some people always see life as the glass is 1/2 empty not as 1/2 full! (It that the saying?)
Littleton for example has IMHO, everything a growing family or a retiree could want! A great medical community, industry and wonderful schools! Not to mention the great white mountains and so on! Of course one will always find negativity if they keep looking for it!
But for small towns in general, I think it is all about your attitude!
