Oh I quite agree: only if the 'resident' is nasty is there an issue. If they are neutral or helpful, they're perfectly willing to stay. However, I'm the one paying the bills - so no playing with the lights or temp

Dare & Wanna! How did you learn how to speak Ghost??

The house with "Fred" was one that was going to go on the market and as the realtor was taking down info, one if the kids asked the father if "Fred" was moving with them - the realtor asked who "Fred" was and the father told them. As far as I know, the realtor disclosed to potential buyers the possibility of "Fred" staying with the house; since "Fred" was friendly, it did not deter the sale of the house
Halloween was funny in the rental - no one came to trick or treat - we heard later that the "locals" had heard someone was thrown down the well and haunted the place outside, so no one came near it on Halloween

Ok Dare & Wanna, how does one communicate with ghost? Do I need to have Whoopi Goldberg with me? Are we talking about talking in tongues?
And when in a home with ghosts, what can one expect to hear?

One night/early morning around 3 a.m. we were jolted awake by what sounded like either a fight or a dance going on upstairs, sounded like a lot of foot stomping. DH yelled at them to cut it out, we had to go to work in the morning, they could resume their activities once we were up - there were a couple of more "thumps" then it stopped. Once we heard what sounded like a chair scraping against the upstairs floor (there was no chair up there that would make that sound).
We never heard voices, just the stomping/thumping sound. Occasionally we we feel something "brush" against us or it would get colder, then it would go away. A few times, when I was working, I would see movement out of the corner of my eye, but I can't say for sure if that was actually "something" or just eyes going funky from looking at the computer screen for too long
For the most part, our "guests" stayed upstairs - our dog would go to the bottom of the stairs, hair would stand on end, she'd growl, then whine, then back away. Our cat spent 99% of the time in one room in the farmhouse and wouldn't venture out.
It was interesting!

A little off subject here, but a company I sold a few years ago was in the business of sweeping offices for hidden bugs and wiretaps. We had some pretty elaborate equipment that would detect things in all sorts of frequency and light ranges, some of which I still have. Anyway from time to time we'd play with the equipment in areas that were reported to have paranormal activity. I have to admit that some things we caught would certainly make you question a few things. We'd catch some EVPs from time to time that we never could explain away.

I agree, explain things to them, be specific: what you want them to stop, maybe why, maybe tell them they can do whatever at some other time (or not at all - like opening the windows or messing with the temp controls). Assure them that if they behave they are welcome to stay, but since you are paying the bills, you have priority.
What can you expect to hear? it varies. I never hear anything other than general house noises. But I notice a lot of times every cat that's ever lived here always periodically looks up at the doorway to the same height and stares briefly, then goes back to whatever it was doing. So obviously whoever/whatever is no threat or the cat would have spit and/or left, so I don't care. If it wants to see what I'm watching on tv.. it's welcome to.
My relatives had a very haunted house and they were hear footsteps on the stairs, thumping, wood chopping in the middle of the night, people saw things, furniture (well pictures on the wall anyway) moved.. they knew pretty much who it was and would talk with Daniel and chide him if there was a problem.
Mtflyer (or was it Dreamer? your names are too similar!) was just talking about catching some EVPs in their office - you may or may not hear them with your ears, but sometimes you can catch something on a recorder. Just talk to them as if they were corporeal. Usually they get worried that someone wants them to leave or something, or they're worried your going to do something to their home they won't like. Reassure them, and they're fine. If they're not.... they gotta go.

Remodeling and construction is alleged to "stir up" the activity. Probably for the reason you mentioned. EVPs are just strange. It's something that when you were there, you just can't explain it away.

Years ago I learned to look at our ventures early on and ask myself, "If everything were to go absolutely perfect, what is the most I could hope to profit from this business?" I found that asking that one question would normally give me a very quick answer as to if we wanted to continue. It'd be a fun hobby, but I'm afraid much of the target market couldn't afford to pay enough to cover the overhead.
