Young couple lookin to move to NH
Hello,
My boyfriend and I are looking to move to the NH area. We are currently researching different towns/areas. Are there any suggestions as to where would be a good place to start? There are a few criteria s that need to be met:
1.) Need to be within an hour away from an airport
2.) Good schools
3.) Price range of house $250,000 - $300,00
4.) Does not need to be a crowded city
5.) Close to good hospitals or outpatient clinics (I am finishing school to become a physical therapy assistant and my boyfriend is a physical education teacher)
We are a young couple starting out and we would first want to rent our own place preferably a house/condo. Hopefully, this will be the area we enjoy and will want to stay and raise a family in a nice house in a good neighborhood with good schools.
Thanks in advanced to anyone that will be able to give advice!
Kim

IF you are young and enjoy a bit more social life, bar scene, shopping, and things to do, then I would definitely stay in the seacoast area. Portsmouth provides all of that and Hampton, Exeter, and dover and very close by, with boston less than an hour south. You'll also be close to the beaches. I live in Hampton and love it, and there are TONS of condos and rental near by.
Portsmouth and Exeter both have larger hospitals, schools are good in Exeter Hampton as well....so I've heard.
We're currently renting but plan to be in the market towards the end of the year. House prices for this area tend to be in that range unless you are looking at 2000+ sq ft.

Kim,
My wife and I are fairly young (mid-late-twenties) and moved up here this past August. We've been renting in southeastern Merrimack but are now buying a home in Hollis.
Nashua/Merrimack/Hollis appealed to us because everything we want to get to really quickly (food shopping, normal shopping, restaurants) are closeby and everything we'd want to get to in a reasonable amount of time of about an hour is within range (Boston, Mountains, Ocean, Lakes). We're not "lets go to the bar" people, but we like to get out and have things around.
Manchester Airport is only 15-20 minutes away and for those early morning flights out of Boston Logan I can get there in under an hour. As for hospitals, there are a lot in Nashua- no idea how big they are/if they are any good.
Oh, and I highly reccomend the apartment complex we currently rent in. Would provide the name via PM if interested.

RE: Dover
Hey Krazy Kim...
See my post in the Dover NH thread...I got long-winded there and don't think anyone wants to listen to me again! By the way, you can still get a nice home in Dover for between $250K to $300K. Just remember, with taxes the way they are, estimate an additional $500+ a month to cover that cost (our house=$300k assessed and about $6000/year in taxes!) Again, PM if I can help at all! Good Luck!

My daughter lives in Dover and teaches 6th grade at the Middle School. She has been there about 15 years - living there that is - and in that school system about half of that time. I think Dover is a lovely community and well situated to the coast and not too far to Boston for the museums, airport, etc. I always love to stroll around Portsmouth, it's a great walking town. Wallis Sands Beach at Rye is also a favorite.

Hi Kim
I just want to toss in that when you are going for your bank pre-approval, I've seen it happen over and over that once the town property taxes are figured in, the pre-approval amount goes down. While we don't have an income tax or a sales tax (for now) our property taxes tend to be higher than many other areas (this is especially true of the towns that are known as having good to excellent schools).
You didn't mention where you are coming from, but we are lucky in NH that we don't really have many "crowded cities" but southern NH does tend to have higher populations than the northern towns (above Concord, our state capital). It's a smart move to rent first, to make sure this is the right move for you--if you have pets it can take quite a bit longer to find the right place.

Best of luck in your search--this is a great place to ask questions!!

Hi I will plug for both Concord , Manchester and the Lakes Region...first Concord ( good hospitals )close to everything Lakes Mountains Coast...close to Grocery stores etc...not sure what kind of house you are looking for but ..home prices might be within your range..taxes are abour $19 per thousand...validate through NHStateGov which gives you all the current taxes for all towns good to have...there is Manchester with towns such as Goffstown and New Boston to give you that small town feel...Now New Boston re taxes and home prices seem reasonable ( ok I know thats subjective ..but keep in mind also how long will it take you to get to stores etc..especially in terms of Gas Prices....and then the Lakes Region...towns right off exit 24 and 25 quite a few (Pm me for more specifices ) hospital nearby, commute to Manchester airport 1 hour, some towns have better schools, tax rates vary off these exits from 12.20 to $20.00 per thousand...ok hope this helps or guides
