Vacation this summer
My wife and I are going to vacation this summer in New Hampshire and Mass. We are staying one night at the Wentworth in New Castle. We have nothing to do on the day we arrive. We will be flying into Boston and arrive around 1:00. What is something we can do in the southern part of New Hampshire for the rest of that day? Thanks.

that place is beautiful since they restored it. i used to live near there, before they restored it. new castle is a nice place to visit. there is a nice park up the road, within walking distance. also your not to far from downtown portsmouth. there are a ton of things to do there. you could also take a nice ride down route 1 , to hampton beach. the weather is getting nicer , so more things in that area will be opening up. or you could go over the bridge into maine and drive up the coast that way. there is just so much to do in that area. if you have any more questions i will try to answer them for you. like i said, i used to live there. i try to get back at least once a year.

I totally agree with the suggestions that JFRRACING gave you. Portsmouth, RT 1 and Southern Maine will all make for great places to see and will be very close.

Once you settle in to your room at the Wentworth in New Castle, you may consider a walk along the trails of Odiorne Point State Park. It's within a few minutes drive from The Wentworth.
If you have an interest in boating, located just across the street, and easy walking distance from the hotel, is the Wentworth Marina. There are some very fine crafts that are moored there, as well as those that dock for fuel and supplies. They also have a restaurant.
Fort Stark and Great Island Common are also located within a short drive from Wentworth. And there is Wentworth Country Club located just over the bridge.
Hope you enjoy your New Hampshire Vacation.

Thers much to do around Portsmouth
I would suggest a harbor cruise, or possibly a visit to the Isle of Shoals (8 miles or so offshore). Strawberry Banke Museum is interesting, but pricey, just to walk amongst old buildings in Portsmouth. For the harbor cruise. "The Heritage" docked near the tugboats offers the best historical interpretation of the cruise boats. Dinner on one of the river-side restaurant docks is nice too. (right near the heritage on Bow St.) there are also brew-pubs handy there too if you're seeking a libation.

Leaving the airport, you'll want to get to Rte 95, then get off the highway at Rte 101 EAST, which will put you into Hampton Beach, just past the center (main beach area). Head north on Rte 1A for a beautiful drive past Rocky Bend and Boars Head, through Hampton, North Hampton & Rye. A beautiful drive with rocky coastline on your right and beautiful mansions on your left. Have your camera ready, that ride never gets old and I've been doing it all my life...
When you get into New Castle, check in, drop your stuff and if you're up for more of a drive (not too long) get onto 1B and it'll loop you around to Portsmouth, then cross over into Maine on old Rte 1 but to avoid all of the outlets, make sure you get onto Rte. 130 which will bring you to 1A north to get to Cape Neddick and see Nubble Light. A great spot for a picnic but might be a little late by the time you wold arrive.
Depending on your plans for the next day, you could take a cruise to the Isle of Shoals ( Isles of Shoals Steamship Company: New Hampshire's Cruise Center and Home of the Party Ship) or maybe a whale watch (early summer is best if you're going out of Portsmouth) or an evening harbor cruise.
Enjoy your trip to New Hampshire

thank you valerie. i think we may do that cruise to the Isle of Shoals. Thank you for the directions for the scenic drive. I think we will do that too. We were planning on going to Cape Cod for two days but it looks like there will be plenty to do in NH and we won't want to go.
