My wife and I are vacationing around Newcastle from June 29-July3. My goal is to get her to want to move to New Hampshire from Texas. The day we fly into Boston will be free after 1:00 p.m. From what I see I am liking the Merrimack region as a possible place to live. Where can I take her in that region that day and night that will make her fall in love with it? Thanks.
Hi Booker
I'll assume you mean Merrimack NH and not Merrimac MA
If you can swing it on a weekday, you might want to try this variation on Greg's idea:
If you're trying to get her to fall in love with New England, you'll have to visit Rockport (on Cape Ann) or Newburyport, MA at some point during your time here. You could even do that on the first day when you leave Logan Airport...
Did you start a similar thread awhile back? I think I remember posting a route to follow to get you to the New Castle, then maybe up the coast of Maine to see the sights (Nubble Light, Ogunquit, etc)... Maybe not though... If you do drive along the coast of MA/NH/ME, you'll want to do it mid-week and not on the weekend, due to traffic coming and leaving the beach. NH has a VERY short coastline, best enjoyed NOT in a traffic jam
When you head west toward the Merrimack area, be sure to visit Amherst NH (right next to Merrimack) and stop in for sandwiches at Moulton's in the town center. If it's nice outside, eat your sandwiches on the green
And....if you do visit Amherst, spend ten minutes more to visit Mont Vernon. It's a very small village and takes very little time to go through. Then turn yourself around and head back down the hill towards Milford. There's a very nice view coming down the hill that you probably won't even notice going up.
You may even run into some smaller towns' 4th of July festivals during that time. A few hold them early to avoid conflicting with the larger cities.
OOohhh I forgot about that!! When you're in Amherst, follow Boston Post Road till it turns into Mont Vernon Road (Boston Post dead ends to the right). When you get to Route 13, take a right. Jthibodeau is right, you won't even notice the view as you're going up the hill. Do explore the town a bit while you're there, that was a good call jthibodeah!
If you want some excitement try coming down Mt. Vernon hill during an ice/snow storm and trying to turn into Amherst Road halfway down. I remember that one.
yes valerie i posted a similar thread a while ago but i didn't know when we were coming. now i do. i already have it in my plans to take that drive up the coast to maine the second day we are there. thanks for that suggestion. i wanted to visit more of the interior part of the state since that is the area i would try to get her to move to. does anyone know if the isle of shoals cruised is worth the time and money? i have never been to new england and don't want to waste my time doing things that aren't worth it. thanks for the suggestions so far.
Also, there's a song by the Shaw Brothers - one of the many 'unofficial state songs of NH' that some one has made a lovely slideshow of gorgeous pics around NH. It would certainly make me fall in love with the state.
