Default Scouting NH - The Trip

Scouting NH

I decided to move this to a new thread to make it easier to follow.

Day One:

Hello All,

For those following my exploration of New Hampshire, here is how day one went. After arriving late last night (Monday) and getting some needed rest, I started out early today.

Heading out from Fraconia, my first stop, Polly’s Pancake House in Sugar Hill! Great food, great ambiance and the staff were friendly and very helpful. After my fill and picking up a little information, I headed out to Lisbon to look around a bit and then headed into Littleton. After passing the Lowe’s and Home Depot, my first stop was Wal-Mart. I know your probably thinking why Wal-Mart? I have always found Wal-Mart to be a good cross-sectional view of the demographics of a community and you can learn much from just walking around. This place did not disappoint. Nice people, overly friendly in my opinion, no lines, no crowds and this is a change and not what I am used to.

One gentleman on his way out of the store saw me approaching and actually stopped me to tell me they were remodeling the store and tried to explain where they moved everything. I didn’t have the heart to tell him this was my first day on this new planet called New Hampshire and cheerfully took his advice.

After leaving I headed onto main street Littleton. After a little walking around, I found my way to Teddy’s Barber Shop and sat with the locals and enjoyed some conversation and the company of the chocolate lab that keeps you company before its your turn.

Littleton is a quaint little town that has all you could need in services and supplies. You could be 10 minutes outside of town and have that remote feel; however, a short drive and your in town. This could be a consideration especially in the winter.

After Littleton, I headed west across 302 and found myself in Crawford Notch. I stopped for a while and hiked around silver cascade. Very nice peaceful place. It seems like every turn there is something to see, do or look at so my progress seemed slow at this point. No hurry however. I then passed Mt Washington Resort and will make it a point to return later this week.

On my way across I passed through many small towns that were very nice. I arrived in North Conway and was stopped by the Conway Scenic Train as it passed in front of me. Just listening to the train whistle echo through the valley as it carried people on their exploration made me want to hop aboard. Next time.

The train passed and I found myself crossing my first wooden bridge. OMG these things are narrow. One sneeze and your into the wall or the oncoming car! After surviving the first bridge, I stopped at Banners in North Conway for lunch and took in more local conversation. It’s amazing what you can learn by listening.

After Banners it was off to Jackson, passing the closed Story Town on the way and then a quick stop at a local real estate office. I received some good info, community tax schedules and a long list of properties for sale. Heading back into North Conway I stopped at the largest Christmas store I have ever seen. I can’t remember the name but it is right along the main drag. Nice place and I was suddenly in the Christmas spirit again.

Getting later in the day now so I decide to experience the Kanc on my way back to Franconia. Words cannot do this drive justice. I am sure during the fall this place must be packed with cars and people; however, today it was all mine. Nobody around and I mean nobody. I stopped at the Swift River, running adjacent to the Kanc and climbed on the rocks and just basked in the 76-degree sunny weather for a while. I threw some rocks in the river, took some pictures, breathed in the clean fresh air of the hardwoods and tried teasing the black flies with a free meal. (No luck) After the river I headed of to the lookouts at the top. All alone again, I marveled at the topography and the changes in the forest along the way. From hardwoods to sub-alpine forest and back again, the kanc rivals any drive we have in the west, including Yosemite. Oh yeah, watch out for the wild turkeys, they are everywhere up here.

After taking in the kanc, I headed back to Littleton for a pizza (Gold House) and another look around. Most of the town had shut down by now so I enjoyed the sunset over the mountains before heading in for the night.

I covered almost 250 miles today and stopped in so many small towns I could not keep count. Bethlehem, Twin Mountain, Bretton Woods, Sugar Hill, N Conway, Conway, Littleton, and on and on.

My first experience with New Hampshire was impressive. I answered many of the questions I had and found this to be more my kind of place that I thought.

I have to resize my pictures so I will get them up latter.

Today is the lakes region and “Hart’s” stay tuned.

Smile Thank You Captjob!!

**sigh** Wonderful Report! Isn't the Swift River beautiful? In the summertime the butterflies will sit with you on the rocks. Did you happen to go through the underpass by the Gorge? or as my son calls it...the big swirly water. Did you get to see the Flume? It's still all beautiful if you were in a different area. North Conway is the best! I highly recommend the train...especially in the Fall...amazing & breathtaking views! I love that Christmas store too. Looking forward to your next report...and some photos!

Um, in Littleton...did you happen to see a lady with purple hair & a tinfoil hat? LOL, sorry I couldn't resist teasing D2D

Great report Captjob! Sounds like you are having a great time. Enjoy your 70degree weather in NH, as you know, in So Ca the next three days we are supposed to hit over 90. Ick. I can't wait to hear about your next adventures. By the way, I, too, always go into Walmart to get a feel of a community. I thought I was the only one

Wow, Cpt Job - you sure packed a lot into one day!

Yep, I love the Kancamagus Hwy - just beautiful any time of the year. and yes, it is extremely popular with the leaf peepers

Northern NH is incredibly beautiful - just a tad too cold for my tastes, and a touch too far from my family, but gorgeous all the same (I'm much more of a forest person than a beach person)

Can't wait to read what you think about the Lakes district! It has it's own beauty as well.

Buck, I was going to ask about the fishing. It seems there are some great trout streams all around; however, I don’t see anybody fishing anywhere. Must be secret spots.

Hi Boo,

Funny, no lady with purple hair; however, I think I saw Normal Rockwell walking….lol

Hello all,

Day 2:

Another warm sunny day in NH today, deep in the 70s. I start out a little later today and head back over to Polly’s for breakfast and conversation. This time I talk to two of the employee/owners for over an hour and explain my mission and intent. I was surprised how friendly and encouraging they were. They explained the ‘Granite Curtin” to me and showed me how this place relates to the rest of the world…lol

The one topic that seems to be the “hot button” issue up here is schooling. I have learned the schools out here all have a reputation, good or bad and it is really all based on not only the tax rate but also how the local school administrators decide to spend the tax money. Some communities have a school bond forced on them because they do not have the voters to overturn a more affluent community next door. Some schools, I have been told, save money by not hiring certified teachers and the drop out rate is much higher. This will end up being the primary consideration when deciding to move. I also learned about a school called the St Johnsbury Academy across the Connecticut River in Vermont. Tuition is expensive; however, paid if you are a resident of St Johnsbury. I will be checking on this tomorrow.

Anyway, after Polly’s I headed back into Lisbon to check out some home sites. Nice, green, very quiet….and hello black flies. Some sites had great views and I liked the overall location between Lisbon and Littleton. Again, I didn’t get bit.

I passed through Littleton again and headed for “The Flume” When I arrived, there were a few local hikers around so I joined them on the 2-mile hike around The Flume. Incredible is all I can say. 90’ towering cliffs as you walk along a narrow river between the rock beds. The water spray and the sounds are not to be missed. A very peaceful place. Unfortunately, I asked about taking the trail in the fall and the lady said the lines and wait can exceed two hours so I may have to pass on my next visit.

After the flume it was south to Plymouth. Upon arrival, I could tell this was somewhat different. A college town, I immiediatly noticed a more hurried pace and a much younger crowd. Suddenly, I was getting tailgated by the suped up Hondas with the loud tailpipes and the blasting stereos…….now it feels like home again. Several kids decided to pass across the double yellows in an attempt to hurry up to the next slow car traveling the speed limit. This driving display also coincided with the sudden observation of memorials and crosses aligning the roads around Plymouth as the accident and fatality rate must be an issue here.

I moved on to Ashland and then Holderness. Again, very nice small towns and my first view of Squam lake. Hey, this looks like my screen saver! I took lots of pictures and headed over to Meredith. In Meredith I found Hart’s Turkey Restaurant and settled right in for lunch as the “only customer.” First, I ordered the full turkey meal
(Just like mom used to make…no really) and began asking the nice waitress a slew of questions. Because I was the only one in the restaurant, she graciously sat down and took to my interview questions as if I were a reporter. I learned all about Meredith, the development, the changes, the little lakes school district, (not recommended) the incredible lake, weirs beach and boardwalk, the water slides and the 2-week biker convention.

Meredith overall was busy. There is much more traffic over here and a more hurried pace. Although small based on what I am used to, this is a tourist town that floods with people in the summer and there is a stark competition between the rich, “out of staters” that invade this area all summer and the way they treat the locals. You can feel the resentment in the air. 10–20 million dollar homes dot the shore-side mixed in with 150-year-old homes in the 200-300 dollar range. Interesting place.

I then passed through Gilford and made a u-turn and headed up to Center Harbor, Moultonborough Falls, East Sandwich, and West Ossipee on my way to Madison to look at more property. Once in the very small town of Madison, I looked at some very nice lots, some with a view of Silver Lake. This is another place right out of a post card.

Watch out! Black fly attack! They are swarming my head as I run back to the rental car swatting like a mad man. Can you picture this? So much for the view. Ok, I made it. No bites; however, I am sure I breathed in half the fly colony during my run….mmmmm taste like chicken.

After Madison, I timed how long it took to get to Conway and North Conway. 15-minutes tops. In Conway you find civilization again. Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Shaus, Hannaford’s, JC Penny’s, Sears, Theaters, even a Starbucks. Just about anything you could need. I also found Kennett High School. A very nice modern school with an active athletic program. Does anyone know anything about this school or school district? I really enjoy the Conway, North Conway area it seems like my kind of place.

I then took the 302 through the notch, all the small towns and back into Littleton. I stopped at a small Mexican place called “Alburritos” I am glad they were open as it was almost 9 pm at this point. Not bad Mexican food. Great taquitos!

Another full day and 200 miles completed. I like both sides of the White Mountains so far. The Littleton/Bethlehem area and/or the Conway side would do nicely.

The Northern part of this state is incredible and is more than I hoped for. The people up here are genuine and really nice. They also encourage me to move my family up here…..not what I expected. Turkeys run wild all over the place and the locals consider them like pigeons. It seems they need to be hunted more! Have not seen a moose yet; however, heed the warnings as over 200 moose are hit and killed on the highway every year not to mention the drivers.

I have learned more than I can possibly write down here. I will add more as it comes. Tomorrow, more land and explorations.

More advice welcome.

CaptJob - St. J is an awesome school. Monroe NH kids can go there for "free" (the town of Monroe pays the tuition). Monroe is a nice small town on the CT River south of Littleton.

You're making me jealous since I'm sitting here at my desk at work. I wish I could be up there right now...perhaps this weekend.

One thing to consider about the Conway region...you are out here during perhaps the lowest tourism time for that area. Traffic, and commute time greatly increases in the summer, dwindles off until leaf peeper season and becomes a madhouse again, dwindles off until ski season, dwindles off until summer. You're in the latter dwindle.

Enjoy your trip here. I hope you take some time to visit the coastline here.
