Thanks guys for all the replies. We are going to be out in NH on the 13th and 14th. I wish it could be longer, but we only have so much time.
Dare, we wont be staying in Albany. That is where we will be getting off the Amtrak Train. We will then drive to Bennington, VT from there. Our stay will be at the Four Chimneys Inn. I fell in love with it when I saw it. You crack me up, lol. Your right, leaving him home might be the best thing !! Actually he has been a good boy lately, he better, his BD party is this coming Sat. He makes me mad, I cancel it .
Verseau, we do want to take that drive . I checked into it a few years back and it looks beautiful. Thank you for the link.
vter, I agree, that is why I am booking now . The same with Amtrak. The prices seem lower too the earlier you book.
Valerie, that is amazing that your Mom made the journey out there. I love that.
The only thing that keeps me from not wanting to make this trek by myself, is my stupid anxiety. I would hate to have a massive panic attack while driving on some road, and I have no idea where I am. So the fear factor plays into this big time for me. But if he cant make it this year, I might be mad enough at him to actually try it with just my daughter. It truly is one of my biggest dreams, to see NE in fall time.
Lisa, seeing Salem is going to be so much fun. From what I have read, they do the whole town up for Halloween. We wont be there on that day, but I am still so excited. We are going to do some of the ghost tours they offer. We have a great hotel right on the waterfront. I told my daughter we are going to take her to the Victoria Station for dinner, as she has never been to one. The one we have or had...I dont know if it is still here..lol, in Universal City was really good. I liked the tram you had to take to get up to the resturant.
vsaksena, thank you for all the links. The Four Columns Inn looks beautiful .
Wanna, I was worried that I might be turned off by all the other folks out there leaf peeping right along with me. But I cant be selfish , it cant be only me out there. I know it will be busy, so I will keep that in mind.
Bry, if you started your search in Chesterfield, then I know I am in good company . I am having a lot of fun planing our activities. Heck, I love looking at all the beautiful pictures of all the things there are to do. I am very excited.

I live in the area near the Chesterfield Inn. It is a beautiful inn and sits back from Route 9, the major east-west route from VT to NH. It has a nice pond out in the front, but I've never, ever seen anyone in it, lol. I'm not really a great fan of their menu/food there. Peter Haven's or TJ Buckley's in Brattleboro VT are fabulous restaurants, or the Newfane Inn in Newfane VT has excellent food. Good, home-style family food can be found at the New England House in West Brattleboro, it's our favorite restaurant! In Brattleboro (5 min drive max) you can visit the Marina Restaurant for fabulous sunsets on the West River or right across the street from them is a canoe/kayak rental place and you can stay in the West River or head right out into the Connecticut River. While you're in West Chesterfield, ask about Madame Sheri's for exploring. Also go to the end of Mountain Road to bike or hike on the state trails that run high above and along the CT River & up Mt.Wantastiquet http://www.chesterfieldoutdoors.com/plands/wantas.html
Brattleboro VT has a great downtown, nice shops, beautiful common for sitting and enjoying the foliage on the trees. http://www.brattleborochamber.org/
Stop at the brand new Grafton Village Cheese factory at the Retreat Farm for VT Cheddar
Welcome to the Retreat Farm
There is a beautiful new hotel opening next month right on the CT River just before you cross the bridge into VT that you might check out, not sure what the name is going to be yet .....probably Riverside Hotel
When you stop in Bennington VT, be sure to make plans to visit the Bennington Monument, spectacular view from the top, great lawn to have a picnic. If you're into historic homes, visit the Park-McCullough House too.
As it stands we will have 2 1/2 days in Vermont, 2 in NH, 2 in MA. It will have to do for now. We will be busy, doing as much as we can, thats for sure. Oh hey, have you ever been to the Adams Family Farm, in Willmington? We really want to do the corn maze and the hayride with 25ft high bonfire, with the roasted marshmallows and ghost stories. It sounds like a lot of fun.
I lived in West Dover too, which is right near Wilmington & visited the Adams Farm many times, great spot. At the one stop light in Wilmington, lol, lots of great shops, nice village to walk around. Wilmington is about 1/2 hour to Brattleboro w/o all that foliage traffic Mt.Snow probably still runs the ski lifts for foliage viewing.
Going east into Keene is an easy ride, for a short hike, visit Chesterfield Gorge right on Route 9. Keene has one of the most beautiful Main Streets. The Pumpkin Festival is very crowded, but fun! It's at the end of the month though.
hmmm,ok where oh where do I found how to correctly show those links?

Wow nhrocky, thank you so much for your post . I appreciate the links as well. My family has been trying to do this trip for a few years, and always have to cancel due to my hubbys work schedule . Which I am going to do everything in my power to see that that doesnt happen this year!!! LOL. I have already "warned" everyone we are going to be leaving in Oct .
The Chesterfield Inn looked so beautiful in the pictures on their website, I just feel in love with it, and booked it right away.
Haha, I like that, the ONE stop light in Wilmington . We are really looking forward to going to the Adams Family Farm. The hayride and bonfire sound like so much fun. We have only one farm out here that does Halloween stuff, and every year we go there and have since my girls were little. But with the fires last year, almost the whole farm burnt to the ground, it was very sad. This farm has been owned by the same family for like 50 or more years. We actually got to go up there after the fire, and it was so awful, almost everything is gone . I felt so bad for the family.
We are staying in Bennington, so seeing the Monument is on our list. I wish we had more time to stay out there. I want to see as much as possible .
Maybe we will have to come out there for Christmas too .
Again, thank you for taking the time to post all the information you did. It is much appreciated .

We live in Riverside where we are melting from the heat and staying inside because the air quality is so poor .
We are hoping to move to NH in 4-5 years but wish it was sooner(housing market slowing us down). My family(a very large one at that) is from Maine and most of them are still there. I lived on Orr's Island for 3 years before returning to CA to take care of some financial interests(ie house) and ended up getting married to my best friend and having 4 great kids to boot. I have been looking to get back to NE ever since and will keep that dream alive till I am living it .
We were just in Maine this last summer and the kids fell in love with NE too. They are so excited to be moving and living by their cousins and living in snow(let's see how long that lasts ).
Hope you get out of CA soon. Best of luck!!

Wow Cindy, I hope you dont have to wait too long to get back to Maine . That is so wonderful on how your best friend became your hubby . That is how it should be. I am sure your kids will love moving back east. Playing in the snow would be reason enough for them to love it . I am sure it will get to a point where it is oh great, more snow...lol, but that is how it is out here with the heat..there is always a good with the bad. The ying and yang of life. I am not sure which is the lesser of the evils though, the heat and crappy air that is so bad you cant go outside, or the cold and snow. I think for me, I would like to atleast try the cold and snow.
Riverside is very hot and smoggy. The air quality is pretty bad out your way. I am in Santa Clarita, and we are having a heck of a time with our air quality too. We had a health hazard warning on the news the other day for our air. We were told to stay inside and avoid going outside if we could. My daughters asthma has been more active since the summer started here. I truly hope this is our last summer in So Cali.
I went to Borders Book Store the other day to see what other kinds of books I could read on NE. I found this great one that had all road trips and hiking trips in it. I was reading about trips in all the NE states, and it was making me long to be there. The pictures are gorgeous. The hiking trails looked like that is the place where I want to be. I could picture myself hiking with my dogs and just getting lost in the beauty of it all.
