If you want bears put all your meat and fat scraps in the compost heap. You will not have to waste energy turning the pile over. The bears, raccoons and dogs will do it for you.

Wanna, your costume creation(s) look fantastic!!! I wish I could be so creative -- I can barely sew a straight line, as my kids will let you know. And purple seems to suit you very nicely We're gonna have to talk about costumes one of these days....

Thanks, Val. I seem to get a lot of compliments on the purple hair when I wear it. I realize that most people probably don't recognize the character unless I tell them what it is (only 1 or 2, who are BIG Disney fans have got it right off), so I guess that's the only 'costumey' part they see. Which is probably why I think I'll get a green wig - much more my color
That one, is really just something mostly thrown together to wear in the halls at SF conventions. I have others I put much more work into.

okay...another "stupid bear question"
We have an old tree stump on our property. We noticed yesterday that it was pretty well "dug into" (the only way I can think to describe it) and a rock that had been next to it (about 14 inches diameter, 4-5 inches thick) was now about 4-5 feet from it. There was a "path" where grass had been "pushed down" which is next to some berry bushes (and yes, I know bears like berries )
This all occurred sometimes between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. We're thinking it was "Yogi" who did the digging and tossed the rock...is that a logical assumption? ..... and please don't tell me it was an anteater that dug into the tree stump looking for ants and we can now add an anteater to our ever-growing zoo!

I kinda like all the wildlife around. Friends in other states are funny when I tell them about the critters we have around the house. One in California said we should call animal control and have them pick up the bear and transport it somewhere...not exactly sure WHERE they think it should be transported, though....another one in Pennsylvania thinks we should board up all the doors and windows so Yogi doesn't break into the house! It's kinda funny hearing all their suggestions - of course none of them has ever seen a bear except on TV or maybe a zoo I wonder if we put a couple of baseball bats out near the stump and stone the bears would get together and REALLY play ball in the yard!
Those armadillos Ken posted are cute little critters - I know nothing about them - do they dig up holes like a woodchuck or do they just dig on the surface type of thing?

I'm one of those people who enjoy seeing the wildlife in natural habit. I'm usually one of those gawking at a moose on the side of the road. Those who offered suggestions probably don't realize most of NH is a National Forest so, yeah you have to learn to live with them because there is no place to bring them. It's like down here. People who move to FL want alligators moved away from their home yet these are the people who bought a home near the alligators home in the pond or lake in the first place.
Armadillos like to dig holes and tear up the surface. They can get pretty big like a small racoon size and dig a hole in the ground to hide in. And the Gopher turtles, forget about them. they can dig a hole big enough for a dog to go in.

That sure sounds like a bear in the backyard to me. If you call the NH Fish and Game people, they will either trap it or dart it . The bad part for me is they'll probably bring it up here.LOL
