I just read in the above posts that it is likely not a particularly gleaming area.

I'll get to read and post any more in the next few days, but for now I have to close up here.

Any helpful info will be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Claremont would be a better choice compared with Bennington. Also, you can drive a short distance from Claremont into the Lebanon/Hanover area as well. When doing a property search I would include all of the surrounding towns in Sullivan County as well since the size of the entire county is not too large. Towns like Sunapee, Springfield, and Unity within Sullivan County have lower equalized tax rates compared with Claremont.
Here is a good website showing the total tax rates for all towns in NH. The lower the number the better!

Claremont was one of the first victims of the deindustrialization that is crippling the US economy. They lost an extensive manufacturing base (Joy Manufacturing - Mining equipment mostly) along with all the wages and the tax base that provided about twenty years ago. We have been visiting a friend in Unity and have watched Claremont slowly recover. The surrounding area has spectacular scenery and the city has a hospital and is within a short drive to one of the best hospitals on the planet. Property taxes are high but, because we have no sales or income tax, property taxes are high all over New Hampshire. If you can bring your own job or income it would be a nice city to work and live in.

Default Anything new to report about Claremont in last year?

We're moving from Maine to the Upper Valley and are looking at Claremont because the housing is much cheaper than Hanover, West Leb, Norwich, New London, etc. Of course, taxes are higher.

Aside from that, anything new in Claremont since these mid-2008 posts about boarded-up downtown storefronts, lack of restaurants, high percentage of renters, etc.? Has it gotten any better? Is there development along the riverfront? Coffee shops in town? Good wi-fi? Anything? Seems like a plus that Amtrak comes through once a day each way.

I'm looking to live in a town with amenities (restaurants, parks, coffee shop, useful stores, local banks, public library, medical and veterinary facilities, etc.) that is walkable from my house (so no rural areas under consideration) and as close to Dartmouth as we can get (where spouse works).

Anything you know about Claremont in this regard, or other towns you can recommend, will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

YouTube - Claremont, NH... Small City Reborn, Pt. 1

check out this video and others on youtube - the three derelict mills in town are being renovated into condos, a boutique inn and a spa, all adjacent to a walkable downtown. The project is a collaboration between 3 businesses and Claremont.

I have never lived in Claremont so I am not speaking with great clarity but my impression of Claremont is depressing I just wouldn't care to live there if it could be helped

Its a great town to live in.

New Community Center being built next year. Over $40M going towards revamping the schools in the next couple years.

New Common Man Inn and Restaurant (Which is Beautiful). Atmosphere is amazing and the setting is spectacular. New Italian Restaurant opening on Pleasant St. in July 09' (Carmella's) Sophie and Zeke's is a great restaurant with rich food and pleasant atmosphere. New Steak House being Built on Washington St.

New Parking Garage almost complete.

Red River Computers Corporate Headquarters is here.

This town is well on its way to revitalization. I live here and thought the same way "Aptor Hours" did prior to my move. Its really a beautiful city and has more promise than given credit for.

There are multiple parks all over the city.

Move in and get involved with the community and the events. You will be delighted you did.

Default thanks

thanks for replies so far (still interested in hearing from anyone else with an informed opinion). the video links buck naked sent made Claremont look great in the past and in the near future but the present seemed a bit sketchy. It's great to hear that a town has strong potential but even better to know that there are new amenities (like restaurants and businesses) opening there now and to hear from someone who lives there that it's a good town to live in now. Because now is when we're moving! (or some time this summer, anyway).

I am going to the Claremont area (Unity) Saturday and I will get there early enough to take a look around. Let you know what I find next week.

Thank you! How kind of you to offer to do this. I want to get up there soon, too, but the forecast is for rain all next week and I prefer to spend time walking around a town (and not getting soaking wet!). I look forward to your report :-)
