Default Best way to find a rental

Hello all-
I'm currently living in Oregon and re-locating back to New England in the next 6 months or so. I'm an optometrist and am pursuing practice opportunities in the Portsmouth area. At this stage, though, I am open to other regions in southern NH still, and am patient enough to wait until a good practice opportunity surfaces.

My Q: Whats the best way to find out about rentals in different areas? I'm not interested in renting a city place, I'd like a little more privacy and seclusion. Also, I'd prefer a house. We use Craiglist here in Oregon A LOT.

Thanks in advance!

thazell, craigslist is active in New Hampshire as well (craigslist: new hampshire classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events) but be aware that many of the rental listings are posted by real estate agents. You can search there, or on our open to the public MLS site (Northern New England Real Estate Network - Official Website of the Northern New England MLS) or you can locate a real estate agent who might be willing and able to help you scope out rentals. In any case, welcome in advance to New Hampshire, and the NH forum!!

Smile craigslist gets my vote for rental searching

Hey, craigslist is a good way to go; you will get your garden variety of places which are excellent and those which are dumps, but that is typical of any online type of search.

I wish I had better suggestions for you, but I am at a loss to recommend anything that is better than craigslist, unless maybe you would want to hire or contract with an agent to work on your behalf, which doesn't seem necessary.

Just make sure to use email correspondence, ask for pictures and floor plans, get addresses so you can google the neighborhood and get a sense of what the neighborhood and surroundings will be. And feel free to post back here in the NH forums to ask for a local's perpective on some of the places you are considering. Good luck to you.

Also, this is just my opinion and is naturally limited to what my experience has been. Hopefully others will have additional insights to give.

Default update: nneren.com is recommended as well for looking at seacoast rental properties in NH

Northern New England Real Estate Network - Official Website of the Northern New England MLS

I checked out this site as well and I would recommend it. Very quick and comprehensive. Set up by realtors instead of the more DIY for-rent-by-owner approach of craigslist, but the site's content is straightforward and easy to navigate, so it should give you that many more options.

I'm glad that you got a chance to check out Northern New England Real Estate Network - Official Website of the Northern New England MLS and then recommend it to others It will show all rentals that are being handled through real estate agencies throughout the state, and provides property addresses directly on the site, so you don't have to contact dozens of agents to get information. It was just a couple of months ago that you had to register with an agent to find this most basic but important information. Now the info is there and available for the renter who wishes to search on their own time.
