Default Town-wide reassessment in Brookline

Brookline recently completed a reassessment of every property in town and not surprisingly values have gone way up...in my case almost $100,000. So, before I panic, has anyone else had experience with this? Our tax rate is near 27.00/1000 here, which is outrageous in my opinion, I just cannot fathom paying 2700 more per year! Are other towns around here taxed at a similar rate?

So, any other towns done this? Will they adjust the tax rate?

Thanks for any insight!

wow! Hollis was at $23.38 last year, and Brookline is going up?! what, are they planning on building their own schools and pulling out of Hollis? gee, that's higher than any of your neighboring towns. Brookline is trying to edge into the exclusivity of Berlin & Claremont with the highest taxes ($30 & $32!). you guys need to kep some restraints on your town spending, what on earth is it going to? It ought to say in your town report.

i'm pretty sure Hollis reassessed last year for this year. Brookline's taxes are higher than Hollis'. Not sure but I'm thinking Brookline has more development than Hollis, which has limited it. Good luck, Benny. We're all tax-slaves.

Default Thanks

Thanks for your replies. We just moved here last year so we are still getting the lay of the land. It sounds like our taxes are way higher than nearby towns, but why? Is it becuase there is really nothing here but trees and some horses and houses? I mean I know Brookline is growing very rapidly and I heard the schools get anything they ask for but now that my hosue value increased so dramtically, I would hope theys adjust the rate down from 27.00

When they reassessed Hollis did your taxes shoot through the roof? I am dreading going to the mailbox to see the next bill that comes in!

When we looked at houses, we chose Brookline over Hollis because property in Hollis seemed more expensive, but now Im thinking its pretty much just as expensive to live in Brookline.

Sorry for the rant...still getting use to the nh property taxes

You don't say how your house assessment value compares to the sale price you paid last year. If it's not fairly assessed, you can apply for an abatement.

I know taxes in Hollis increased, but don't know how much they increased by since this is our first year here. (we lived in Brookline just over 10 yrs ago, btw) Home prices in Hollis are more expensive, very generally speaking, and only if I'm understanding correctly, but taxes in Brookline are higher. Sorry about the vagueness, finances are not my cup of tea, i consider them a necessary evil I'm fairly certain however that Brookline plans for more development than Hollis. Hopefully this won't negatively impact the values of Brookline homes. I really like Brookline and hope it maintains its rural feel.

usually, when the assessments increase a lot, the rate goes way down - it was only high because you most likely were not at 100% assessment like other towns

when I lived in Derry, we would get a big increase in value, but the rate would drop by $10 or more.

Is the tax rate going to stay at $26.44???? that would be unusual.

Brookline 2007 tax rate:
County 1.17
Schools (Brookline & coop) 18.14
Town 4.55
State education tax 2.58
Total $26.44
