Short Term Rental Merrimack/Bedford/Amherst
Can anyone suggest a short term rental option for my family and I when we relocate from Maine. We have yet to sell our house up here in ME and don't want to buy again until we do ...
Anywhere in the Bedford, Merrimack, Amherst area would be great.
many thanks
Gayle

You could try to find someone who has relocated that has a house on the market and is willing to rent. My sister-in-law did that when she went from RI to MA. There are a lot of condos for rent in Nashua; merrimack has some as well. Try placing an ad in craigslist.

There is always the good old standby, craigslist, but much of what you will see on craigslist is also going to be on the MLS ( Northern New England Real Estate Network - Official Website of the Northern New England MLS) If I don't have a direct contact with a possible rental option, I've been known to call around to listing agents of homes that have been on the market for an extended period (which I know the owners have already relocated) or expired listings (listings which failed to sell for whatever reason). There is a huge price range, and from what I see out there, it's possible to rent a 4-bedroom home on a couple of acres for just a couple hundred dollars more per month than a 2-bedroom condo...
Smokers and people with pets (especially dogs) will have a much more difficult time finding a rental, as about 90% of the owners won't even consider renting to either, so if that's the case, the time to start looking is now.

There is the Residence Inn in Merrimack. I know that some companies use this as 'temporary housing' for new employees when they are hired and get a corporate relocation package. They have furnished suites which aren't too bad. I guess it depends on how many of you there are, and how long you are staying.

I would really check out Bowers Landing in Merrimack. Was very happy there for the year before we found our house. Quiet, reasonably priced, excellently maintained, new.
There is also a Dunkin Donuts (where they actually make the donuts) on the end of the entrance road and occasionally you'll get the light smell of freshly cooking donuts. Fantastic.
I believe their largest units are 2 bedroom/2 bath though...so not sure if that's "too small" for your needs. They are VERY well laid out though.

It is great to hear another good review of Bowers Landing; that is where my husband, son and I plan to live when we relocate to NH in Summer '10. I have just put in an inquiry with the apartment management but in the meantime, would you mind sharing what your rent was for the 2bd/2ba? Hope it is not too intrusive, just trying to figure out living expenses well in advance. Thank you!

We had the slightly smaller unit and also had a dog and I *think* it was $1330 or $1235; it's been a year and a half so I forget exactly.
That price included water/sewer & hot water/heat...so that was a nice bonus as well. So we only had to pay for electric/cable/internet...made life easier!
Oh, each room also has its own A/C unit...which is also nice if you prefer different temps or only need the bedroom cold in the summer for sleeping.
Beware they have some very well enforced "don't bother your neighbors" policies; but they also apply them with common sense (example, if your dog cries/barks when you first move in; they accept it as "adjusting"...but if it continues...that's a problem).
We really liked Bower's Landing.
Now a warning regarding another complex, Bay Ridge Apartments (just off the interstate when you enter NH from MA in Nashua ) and saw a juvenile roach when we were checking out the vacant apartment. We asked if they do pest treatments between tenants/as needed as a result... Management then stated that "maintenance has never seen a roach here so it had to be a june bug" (it was a roach). Needless to say if they treated a perspective tenant that way...I can't even imagine how they'd treat us once we were locked into a contract.
