What's in Barrington?
Hi everyone,
Anyone familiar with the town of Barrington? In particular, with regards to raising a child. I hear it's a nice community, but there doesn't seem to be much going on there. Are there any playgrounds, parks, etc.?
Thanks!
Julie

there isn't to much in barrington. i used to live in rochester, right up the road. barrington is pretty rural. last time i was there, there was a strip mall acouple of gas stations, the chirstmas dove and an old time store that's famous for their cheese. i can't remember the name of that store. that's about it.

C'mon you have to remember CALEF'S! Wasn't just the cheese, but the pickels and the PENNY CANDY!
Barrington has a movie theater too It is quite rural, but so many towns within driving distance of less than 30 minutes - Dover is less than 10 minutes, Rochester/Gonic is also less than 10 minutes, Lee is about the same. Durham and Nottingham/Northwood is also close

Heheh, sounds nice. :-) I was asking because we only have one car and can't really afford to get a 2nd one. (Both my husband and I work from home, so we really don't need two vehicles.) So if there are at least a few things that are within walking distance, that would be ideal. Is it a very family-oriented community, or mostly retirees that live there?

Walking distance depends on where you live - there are several "Mom & Pop" stores spotted throughout the town and outlying areas. Barrington is a little of both, it is an "up and coming" growing town and I know there is a softball field on Rte 9 right up the road from the church, gas station, bank, ice cream parlor and the aforementioned CALEFS. Calefs has a lot of everything you'd need - and the Christmas Tree Store is across from them - beautiful store!

Barrington has one of the only Urgent Care clinics in the area.
A great shooting club: Major Waldron Sportsmen's Association
Very many mom & pop eateries.
Good value homes and land.
Within 20 mins to Dover and Portsmouth and 40 mins to Manchester & Concord.
And I believe high schoolers are send to Oyster River high in Durham - a great school.

Great, thanks for all the info. It's very helpful. :-) Definitely noticed "good value homes" and is really why I asked. LOL We can't afford much and everything is so stinkin' expensive! What other similar towns would you recommend, that are equally affordable?

You might look into Farmington, Madbury, Gonic, Strafford, even Somersworth (although their schools aren't the greatest). I'm not sure what price range you are looking for but those towns are quaint. Valerie C might be able to help you as well. She's one of the best!

Price range is below $170k, which as you can imagine is making things difficult. My husband works in Andover, MA so we need to be within one hour's drive or less. (Fortunately, he works from home most of the time and only needs to drive in 1-2 times a week.) For that reason, Farmington and Strafford are out, and I didn't find anything in Madbury below $190k. Rochester might be a potential, though; I'm finding a few houses in our price range and the taxes aren't too insane (compared to other areas)... :-)
