Well, that's not ENTIRELY true. Hotels, motels, rentals (summer rentals, etc), prepared food (i.e., restaurants) and alcohol purchased in bars is subject to an 8 percent tax. IOW--it's meant to hit tourists more.

Property taxes are fairly high here, no doubt--but consider parts of where I used to live (CA) that have what's called a Mello-Roos assessment. If you were to buy a new home in a devleopment you're looking at an extra 0.5-0.75 percent for 30 YEARS to pay for the infrastructure in that area.

So you're buying a 700-900K house (not unusual) and paying property tax PLUS Mello-Roos, or nearly the same percentage as NH property taxes. (FWIW, I did not pay M/R and still had a prop tax bill of 6K a year in CA).

In other words, it's all relative.

Our tax berden percapita is 7.4% the only state with a lower 1 is Alaska. That Means With the taxes Just 7.4% of our yearly income goes to state taxes. That's all state taxes not just Property Tax. And NO we don't tax chips lol. Prepared foods consist of salads at the salad bar Or the rotisery chicken at the supermarket ECT. So the meals tax must be taxed to a MEAL not a jar of olives or a bag of chips or anything of that nature.
