I feel that the people in NH are taken care of by the government much better than Florida. Up here, these people get their rent paid for them, food stamps, their college at the local community paid for them in full with $50 voucher for school supplies etc. The state tries to encourage people to get a college career and move on where as in Florida, i see it as just letting people string along and not assisting in ways to educate and drive them to achieve a career to break from living on the system. Of course, you'll also find those who would just rather take the easy ride out and live on the government but i believe there's an end to it if the individual is not making any progress to achieve higher goals. I;ve seen many homeless people in FL where they even build campsites just off the woods along town where in NH, i don't think i've seen any. then again, who could survive the winters up here outdoors which could be reason as to why the government is so eager to progress and individual and have them move on. In my opinion, spend more now to get these people on the right track with a career rather than pay and string them along to barely survive for the rest of their lives.

As Jesus said, "There will always be poor, pathetically struggling".
Acts of kindness like this are always seen as grace in my eyes. People need to take of each other. Yes, there are always the evil types and people who feel that they are "owed" a living. They need help, too. We sometimes lose our way and fall off the edge, becoming ghosts. It's become too easy to look the other way in our a/c, leather lined cars. It's not that easy for some people. Mental disabilities, poor decisions in life, and just plain bad luck. Pray for them and thank the people who help.

He said he was hungry, they gave him food- that was an act of kindness and the right thing to do.
Regardless of where you are financially (currently) a chain of the right events could land you homeless very quickly.
As for money which is then used to buy alcohol, think of the lone individual whose life is turned upsidedown by disease (say- cancer) one second they are an investment banker with good insurance the next they are on the street dying of a brain tumor and in constant pain- at least the vodka might help dull the pain of the tumor slowly devouring his brain and sanity. Is a few bucks for that relief really that bad?
When I lived in Arlington (outside DC) I always carried bottles of water in the car...it got very hot there and the homeless always appreciate it. Even if they were "faking" (as many do there since you can actually make a decent income doing it) at least I gave someone thirsty something to drink.

I knew a man that lived in northern NH in a 6 x10 ft trailer off in the woods and worked at hard labor all his life. He shoveled snow and cut pulp in the winter and cleared brush in the summer. I have no idea what he ate or how he cooked but when they found him after he died the pile of whisky bottles was bigger than the trailer. He was a truly unique individual.

That reminds me of a friend in AZ. She picked up one man with that sign and had him dig out her large cactus garden since she was going to install a pool. She said that every time she looked out the window, he was standing on the patio smoking. When he said he was done, it was almost dark, so she just took him back where she picked him up and gave him one bag of groceries. The next day, she looked out and said he did a beautiful job. Everything was just how she wanted. She felt so bad that she only gave him one bag since she thought he wasn't working hard, so she ran back to see if he was back on his corner and took him several more bags and apologized. From then on, anytime she wanted something done, she hunted him down.
