Default Cameras

Ok, this has nothing to do with living in NH, but many of you guys take terrific photos. The clarity is wonderful. I know photography is also a skill, but was wondering what kind of cameras you use? I'm in the market for a new one and was hoping you could steer me in the right direction.

Whatever you do don't buy a HP - it dramatically uses batteries. There is a photography board on CD with lots of recommendations on cameras in many threads.

Personally I use photobucket to post my photos, but the camera I love is my Canon PowerShot S2 IS (image stabalizer). I bought it even though the S3 was out already and highly recommended, but this model was recommended to me as well. It has a 12x optical zoom (brings you closer to the object) and a decent digital zoom (I didn't care about this one as much - I don't enlarge my pictures to poster size often - which is when pixels and digital zoom really matter.) The S2 is sold on ebay a lot, and some real nice deals.

Canon Power Shot A560. Basically similar to the A540 shown (my wife has that one as well), but with 7.1 MP and a few more features. Works very well and seem to be pretty durable. My wife has taken almost 5000 pictures in a bit over two years with hers and it hasn't blinked yet. Also, get the rechargable AA batteries, like Duracell's or Energizers. You can get a charging unit with 4-6 batteries for about $20-25. They last longer and you can recharge them over an over hundreds of times. Worth every penny. I just had to buy replacements for my wife after two years and I purchased just the batteries (Duracells) on sale at Best Buy for $12/eight batteries. A bargain. Usually goes for $28. Another point to
make is purchase a 1 or 2 gig memory card at the time of your purchase. The factory cards are usually pretty small. You'll need at least a 2 gig if you want to take video. Radio Shack has some great prices on the SD cards that many cameras use. That also brings up another point. Try to avoid the Sony's as they have their own proprietary memory cards. Find a camera that uses common ones like the SD. Makes things simpler in the long run. Sony's are nice, but remember what they tried to do with Betamax video in the 80's? A complete failure. They just want to be different enough to corner the market on all aspects of their designs.

Good luck and happy picture taking!!

Deb,
As I think the examples in the responses have shown, you don't have to buy a $1000 digital SLR to get fantastic shots.

Any pro will tell you that the camera is a tool. A camera can't make you a better photographer.

Learn just two things to take great shots:
1. Hold the camera steady. Blurred shots are almost always do to moving the camera during the exposure. The less light there is, the steadier your hand must be. Understanding exposure fully is important and a lot to learn - but you can get by on an auto camera and a steady hand (oh, and turn off that flash).

2. Framing/composition. Kneel or lie down. Stand on a chair. Lie on your back. Tilt the camera. Get in close. Have people look away from the camera. Do anything but stand 10ft in front of your subject and push the button.

I use a camera for my reports to my clients. It's used more a a tool then for entertainment. I've always used Pentax and have had great service. I still have my 30 year old Pentax K1000 SLR film camera and it continues to work fine. Today it's a K100D. It's probably more camera then you'll need but, in my case, it take two things to do any job well. Knowledge and tools......
