Residential tread size = Min. 10 1/2 deep X Min 3 feet wide with no more than an 8 inch rise to the next tread.

Commercial tread size = Min. 12 inches deep X 4 feet wide with no more than a 7 inch rise to the next tread.

Building Codes can change often depending on where you live. I suggest you double check my numbers for your area before you start to construct the stairs.

We don't have a state code. Each town governs their own standards though most of them follow BOCA or ICC guide lines. Check with the town that your doing the project in.
