Was it just the sky lighting up or was it lightening streaks that hit the ground? We never get anything like that out this way. I cant remember the last time I saw lightening. I bet it was scarey.
And hey, us women sometimes need to grab our hubbys big strong arm to feel safe .

WIMU, I'm glad to hear that you came through last week's storms OK. I was trying to remember who on the forum lived in Deerfield (I remember chatting with you awhile back about my aunt and uncle who also live in Deerfield). That's a shame about the nursery--I've heard that they have a really nice assortment of natives, which I'm trying to do with my gardens. Do you know if all of their stock was destroyed as well? The whole thing is just surreal--in Missouri where I lived for 5 years, tornados and other powerful storms are a way of life, but here in NH, it's just so unexpected...
And Suzet, lightening is really beautiful if you can get past the fear. All my life until just about 10 years ago, I had a real phobia of storms. The best thing I ever did was move from New England to Missouri, where the storms are unbelievably powerful--even the storms that we have had in the last several weeks (except of course for the tornado--that's the mother of all storms!!) pale in comparison to the storms there. I wish my videos were digital, I'd post them on you tube. Lightening streaking across the sky, watching the storms approach from 10, 20, 30 miles away, feeling the hot and heavy air that is so thick you can hardly breath, then the wind picks up, you feel a mix of hot air, with some cold bursts in between, and you know you are in for it! The sky is dark dark dark, with a layer of lightness at the horizon. Once the storm closes in, it's just intense!! I had to learn to love storms or I would have lost my mind there in the midwest!!

believe it or not I love watching approaching thunderstorms too--Val, you described it perfectly although I imagine Missouri's storms were much stronger! I sit outside to feel it coming, then once it starts pouring move to the garage to watch from there. What an experience!

Valerie most of their stock did survive because the tree limbs propped up the trees so they didn't land flat on everything but they did lose a fair amount. They have hundreds of volunteers helping repot and pot new items but they lost 90% of their trees that shade many of the plants and have lost the beautiful setting they bought many years ago. They have a top quality product and yes many natives. I guess we will always get that freak tornado here but may not see one for many years again.

I had to meet someone in Northwood yesterday, so I took a ride past the area along 107, just near Route 4. It's been a week since the storm, and there has been alot of clean up work done, but let me tell you seeing the pictures is nothing like seeing the hundreds (thousands?) of trees that are sheared off, lying on their sides, it's just an incredible sight. I stayed right on the main roads as so not to get in the way of any cleanups going on... I can't even imagine how much more is going on on the back roads nearer to the lake...

Here is a picture of how that storm passed thru the nursery in Deerfield. My old smokehouse business is that little building with the small parking lot across the road from the upper nursery.

Val, I could almost feel the storm as I was reading your post . As Lisa said, you described it so well. I would love to experience a thunder and lightening storm.
Ken, I couldnt see the photo very well. I dont know if it was the my computer or not . It was all dark.
