Is it visible only from the Northern part of the state? I'd love to see it, but fear I am too far South.

I think there is a NASA site with space weather. The aurora is caused by the solar wind being deflected into our atmosphere near the magnetic poles. The glow is similar to the glow of a neon light but using atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen as the gas. Try Google aurora to obtain more information. Science aside it is a wonderful sight to see. It is raw electrodynamics in action.

brukewilliams - we were talking about the aurora not about terrestrial weather and/or climate.

Really???? There's actually something you didn't know??? Geez, I am sooooo disappointed. Here I was thinking that you were the smartest person on earth and knew everything.

Seriously, I am surprised that it's seen in this state at all. I thought we were too far south. Does it happen every night somewhere, or only when certain conditions are right? I always wanted to visit Alaska and had been hoping to see it there too. Anyone ever take one of those cruises to Alaska? I'm rambling, I haven't had any caffeine yet.
